Major Kennedy entered the ser vice in November., 1 941 and was inducted at Fort Jackson, and from mis ponu was sent directly over seas where he has served for thirty months. At the time of he entered the service he was employed by the fclholt fclectno Company of Pen nsylvania. Major Kennedy has a brother Capt. Frank Kennedy. Jr., who i: serving with the :il(ltb Engineer: in Italy. Both are graduates o State College. Italeigh Miss Elizabeth Church, daughter of Mr and Mrs C t) Church, of Canton, R.F.D. No. 2, valedictorian of the class of 1945 of the Bethel high school, and Miss Mary Ellen (Unlock, salutatorian, daugh ter of Mr. ami Mrs, George Blaloek. Canton, K.F.I). No. 3. Both girls have made outstanding records in their entire years in school. 36 Men Report For Pre-Induction Examinations The following group left here on Thursday for pre-induetion ex aminations at Fort Jackson. Joe Jack Atkins was named leader ot the group, with Ecton Ray Man ning serving as assistant leader. There were three transfers in the group as follows: Hugo Ernest Birkner, of Kent. Ohio, Crawford Carl McMahan, Newport News, Va., and Ecton Hay Manning. Clay Madison, pastor of the First Methodist church, deliv ered the baccalaureate sermon for the graduates h( the class of 1945. There were no church services in the community and all congrega tions assembled at the high school. Rev. M. K. Williamson gave the invocation and Rev. R. G. Tat um the benediction. Jean Hyatt serv ed as accompanist for the proces sional and the recessional. On Tuesday morning the band gave a concert followed by the awarding of certificates of promo tion of 165 students from the loiiior high school to senior high Perfect attendance record cer tificates were presented to HO stu dents of the junior and senior high schools The Headers Digest award of a year's subscription was given to Jane Wyche. ajuf anunuucemeU was made that Joanne Boone, sen ior, had won a $1,000 scholarship to Brenau College in n competitive examination. Glen Brandon Wounded In Action Gets Purple Heart First Sergeant Glen O. Brandon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl B. Bran don, Waynesville, was awarded the Purple Heart medal at the Fitz simons General Hospital, in Den ver, Colo., on May 29th, in an im pressive ceremony. Sgt. Brandon was wounded in action near Saarbrucken. Germany, on Feb. 17, 1945, while serving with the 253rd Regiment, (53rd Di vision. He has been a patient at the hospital In Denver since April 29, after serving for five months over seas. His wife, Mrs. Josephine Brandon, and child. Allen, age 2. reside in Waynesville.
