Dock Caldwell Honorably Discharged From Army This Week Private First Class Dock Cald well, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Caldwell, of Jonathan Creek, has been honorably discharged from the service. He entered the army in March, 1942. and was inducted at Fort Bragg and from there sent to Camp Claiborne, La., and re turned to Ft. Bragg before being sent overseas in April, 1943. Pfc. Caldwell served in Africa Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, Hoi land and Germany, and was at tached to the 82nd Airborne Divi sion. At the time he entered the service he was engaged in farming He is entitled to wear the Good Conduct medal, European-African and Mediterranean theater ribbon one Silver Star, one Bronze Star, Bronze Arrowhead, six battle stars and Presidential Citation. Pfc. Caldwell has three brothers who have seen service: Pvt. Lloyd Brown Caldwell, discharged, who served over three years overseas in the European theatre; T.Sgt Jess Frank Caldwell, wounded in Belgium, now in hospital in Rome Ga., and Tommy Caldwell, Seaman second class, now in the Pacific. Carol Grahl, HA 2c, son of Mr. and Mrsi Linwood Grahl, who recently spent a short leave here with his parents, has reported to Beauford, S C, where he is serv ing in the U. S. Naval Air Station dispensary. Young Grahl volunteered in the service in January, 1945, and took his boot training at Bainbridge, Md., and after completion of his training was assigned to duty in the hospital there prior to his transfer a short time ago. Sgt .McCraeken entered the army as a volunteer in November, 1940, enlisting in Miami, where he was I m the contracting business at the time. He served as a crew chief of a B-26 in the ground crew, and was attached to the 340th Bombard ment group of the 9th Air Force. He was stationed in England. Former Haywood Resident Dies At Home In Texas News has been received in the county of the death of J, L. West, native of Haywood, who moved to Texas in 1902. His death occurred in McKinney, Texas, on Sunday, M-pt. 15. He is survived bv his widow, the former Miss Ellen Wil liams, of Canton and two children, Mrs James Harris and Riley West, Doth of Texas. October 1, to take up general medi cal practice in Winston-Salem. Private First Class Farady Rath bone, son of Mr. and Mrs. W .P. Rathbone, of Fines Creek, is spending a 30-day furlough with his parents. He has recently ar rived In the States from onr year's service In the medical corps in the European theater. He was attached to the General U. S. Hospital in France. Pfc. Rathbone entered the serv ice in October, 1942, and was in ducted at Camp Croft, from which he was sent to Camp Forrest, Tenn . and later to Camp Grant, III., before being sent overseas. When his furlough is completed he will report back to Fort Bragg. Pfc.
