Smith, assistant scout executive of Ihe Daniel Boone council in charge. J. Davis Whitesides served as tlerk of the court with Hugh K Terrell, Jr., and Tommy Moore ad vancing the colors. Billy Mainous led in the pledge to the flag, and Rev. Miles McLean gave the invo cation. Tenderfoot badges were present ed to the following by Mr. Smith executive: James N. Swift and George Stovall, both of troop 2, of Waynesville. Ilallett Ward of Lake Junahiska presented second cl.iss badges to Max Smathers. Charles Hawkins, and Charles Duckeit. all of troop four of Canton. W. S. Edwards, of C:.nton. pre sented First Class awards to Ilal lett Ward, Jr., of troop 8. Lake Junaluska, and Hugh K. Terrell. Jr., of trooo 12, of Canton. Merit badges in various fields Were preesnted to the following by C. C. Poindexter, of Canton: Nickey Carter. Among those announced attend ing the trainers institute were: C. C. Poindexter. 11. R. Moffett. W. S. Edwards, and H. W. Iiobert- Arthur Smith, Jr. Transferred To Camp in Louisiana Arthur Smith. Jr. 'Bud, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Smith, of Hazel wood, has recently been trans ferred from Fort Bragg to Camp Planchc. La., where re is to com plete his basic training in the Transportation Corps. Young Smith is a graduate of the Waynesville Township high school and was an incoming sopho more at Western Carolina Teachers Coilcge at the time he was induct ed in the service, lie was active in the college life, being a member of Hie Western Carolina Players, W. Oscar Barker Receives Discharge At Drew Field, Fla. Corporal Oscar T. V. Barker, son of Mrs. It. I!. Barker, of Waynes ville. was discharged from the serv ice with the U. S. Army Air Forces on October 16. at Drew Field sep aration center. Tampa. Fla. Cpl. Barker was employed as a salesman at Ihe Smith-Courtney company. Richmond. Raymond Rathhone Arrives From Overseas Private First Class Raymond Rathhone, son of Seldon Rathhone. of the Maggie section of Havwood county. i- spending a several days furlough with relatives in the county lie entered the service on April 10. 1 !)44. and was inducted Bragg. Fort Bragg he was sent McClellan. Ala., and from there to the European theater where he served for eight months. He is entitled to wear the Infantry man's Combat badge. Good Con duct medal, and the European Theater ribbon with two battle stars. When his furlough is com pleted he will return to Fort Bragg. Yates, I president, presiding. A large nuin, ber were present and plans were completed for a Hallowe'en carni val which will be held in the school auditorium on Friday evening, the 26th. Mrs. Mayne Seay, first grade teacher, spoke on Safety" citing many hazards in the home and showed how many accidents could be avoided. Other features on the program included a piano solo by Hilda Dotson, of the 11th grade, and a tour of the class rooms, with each teacher in her room to receive the visitors and patrons, after which a social hour was enjoyed with ice cream and cakes served. George Blaylock Returns From Europe Staff Sergeant George Blaylock.. Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. George Blaylock, of the l'igeon section, has received his discharge from the armed forces. He entered the serv ice in November, 1941, and was inducted at Fort Bragg. Before he was sent overseas to the European theater where he served for 12 months he was trained at Fort Eustis, Va., Fort Bliss, Texas, Philadelphia, Camp Davis and Camp Pickett. Va. Sgt. Blaylock is entitled to wear the European Theater ribbon with three battle stars, American De fense ribbon, Pre-Pearl Harbor. In fantryman Combat badge,, and one bronze star.
