"Let each one of us please his neighbor.") PAUL had been waiting on the coast of Asia Minor for divine leading as to wjhat next he should do. It was given him tn a vision of a man from Macedonia, saying, "Come over into Macedonia and help lis." Up to this time Paul had not been out of Asia. He heeded the crII, and with others went to the Greek city of Phillppi. There, whenjhe Sabbath came they went to the river bank, where, if there was no synagogue in the town, the devout went to pray and medi tate. Sure enough they found a gathering there, and among them was a woman whose name was Lydia. She was a prosperous busi ness woman, a seller of fine purple. Lydia really was a native of Thyatira, a city of Lydia, in the province of Asia, and was named for her country, Lydia. Purple dyeing was a Lydian industry. Lydia listened to Paul with the greatest interest. Her heart was opened, says Luke. Then and there she was baptized, with all her household, and then she invited the missionaries to her home, in sisting that they accept her hos pitality "She constrained us," St. Luke says. Paul's Letter to Timothy From Rome Paul wrote to his friend, Timothy, Whom he had selected as his personal mission ary helper. We hear of Timothy first In Acts 16:1, where we read of his Gentile father and Jewish mother, Eunice. He is, at the time of Paul's letter, superintending pastor of the great Ephesian church. His association with Paul was always one of close friend ship, "as father and son." Paul was a strong character, with a wonderful blending of strength of purpose, exquisite sympathies and loving heart. Tim othy relied on Paul as on a stronger character, as he is said to have been shy, sensitive and auxious in the face of difficulties. Paul's salutation to Timothy is In the custom of the day, "Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is In Christ Jesus, to Timothy, my dearly be loved son." "Greatly desiring to see thoc Distributed by King Features Syndicate, Inc. being trtindful of thy tears, that I may be-ftlled with joy. "When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grand mother, Lois, and thy mother, KV. nlce; and I am persuaded that in thee also.' "Wherefore I put thee in re membrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands." Timothy came from a Christian home, in Which boih his grand mother and mother were devout women who had brought the boy up in their own earnest faith. Paul was undoubtedly trying to build up Timothy's confidence in himself in this letter because he knew it might not be long- before he (Paul) would be gone from life and no longer able to aid his "son" with his own strength and faith. "But continue thou ln the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, know ing of whom thou hast learned them; "And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." Paul Advises Titus Titus, to whom St. Paul wrote the letter following his second epistle to Timothy, was a devoted and trusted convert of and worker with Paul. It is thought he was a Gentile, and he accompanied Paul and others on various mis sions. Paul's letter to him tells him how to conduct his church for the best interests of all; pleach ing to them that which shall be come "sound doctrine." "That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. "The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, no false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; "That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husband, to love their chil dren." And in the last two verses given us in today's lesson-- "For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, "Teaching us that, denying un godliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world." Incalculable is the influence of a home where love rules with sober ness, righteousness, godliness. WEETH EART Toilet Soap (Limit 3) Aftalizer Tablets ka-Seltzer , 49c PS.
