W. Gudger When I was a boy Uncle Wid Medford was the boss bear hunter of the Great Divide. He lived to the left of Micadale on the branch coming down from Lickstone Bald by the Benners' place. When in the old days (the 1870 s and early 1880's) George Owenby and I started for a trip around the Great Divide from Pigeon Deep Gap (south of Lickstone) to Old Bald, we would go by. Uncle Wid's and pick up young Wid for the trip. Sometimes Uncle Wid would shoul der his old flintlock rifle and go with us, and such a trip was a red letter one. The tales he would tell at night in the camp in Pigeon Deep Gap would send the shivers up and down our backs, accentuat ed as they sometimes were by the hoots of owls and the howls of wolves The good old days! Uncle Wid Medford is gone, and my days for tramping the Great Divide are in the far past. I look at these great peaks and say to myself'Ncver Again!" There are millions of people on the stockholder lists of these companies housewives, farmers, nurses, teachers, mechanics. You may be one of these rqany direct owners. Football interest in Canton is running high and a large crowd is expected. As usual, the Canton high band will be on hand to play before the game and at half time. This will be observed as "Par ents Game." Parents of members of the Black Bear football squad will be guests of the Canton High School Athletic Association for the game. At Aberdeen Mountaineers Roll Over Murpry By 39 to 7 Score The Waynesville Mountaineers swamped Murphy in a return grid attraction at Murphy Friday after noon by a score of 39 to 7. The local eleven struck hard and fre quent to show added power since the first game when the Moun taineers downed Murphy 21 to 12. Robinson is credited with two touchdowns along with Milner who managed to reach paydirt twice also. Minnett broke away for a long run and a score and a pass from Robinson to Messer account ed for another Waynesville score. The extra points were made by Minnett and Robinson on line plays while another came about when Robinson passed to Messer. The only score for Murphy was made in the fourth quarter after a drive down field and a pass. This was the only time the Murphy team threatened. The Mountaineers have been showing improvement for the last three weeks and all indications are they will play a different game Thanksgiving against Canton than they did earlier in the season.
