holds a position with the Western
Electric Company, of Kearny. N. J

Holds November
Meeting

charged from the armed forces,
and the couple will make their
home in Fayetteville.

German Prisoner For
20 Months,' Discharged
SSgt. Joseph H. Smith, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Smith of Hazel
wood, has been discharged from
the armed forces at Lincoln. Neb.
He entered the service in 1941
while a student at high school and
was attached to the :i!!4th Bomb
Group of the 8th Air Force.
Sgt. Smith was sent to England
in June, 194:1. and on Sept. (i. 1943,
was shot down over Stuttergardt.
Germany, and taken a prisoner
He was in Cicrman prison camps
for 20 months before he was liber
ated by the Anicrictms of tin
104th Division on April 2f. 1945
Sgt. Smith plans to make his
home in Asheville and has accept
ed a position with the Sky land
Motor company.

Returns to Hospital
After 30 Days Here

Chambers. V. S Marines, son of
Mr. and Mrs. C C. Chambers, of
Portland. Ore . formerly of Clyde,
has reported to hospital at Astoria.
Ore . after spending a 30-day fur
lough here with his brother-in-law
and sister. Mr. and Mrs. Marion
T liridgos.
Pfe Chambers, who entered the
service in i-enruary. i;4-. as a
volunteer was inducted at Fort
Bragg and took his boot training
at Parris Island. From the latter
he was sent to the War College,
Newport, It. I , and from there to
California and overseas.
lie was wounded in the battle
of Iwo .lima in February of this
year and was returned to the States
a few weeks later. Since that time
he has been a patient in a govern
ment hospital in Oakland. Calif.,
until Ins recent, transfer to his
present station. At the time he en
tered the service he was employed
by the Newport News Shipbuilding
and Dry Dork Company.

armed forces at Fort Bragg. He
was inducted at Fort Sam Houston.

past three years.
Technician Blythe was attached
to the 8lh and 9lh Air Forces and
served in tbe Ordnance Bomb Dis
posal Squad. He served in England
Normandy. France and Germany.
At the time he entered the serv
ice lie was employed by the Cham
pion Paper and Fibre Company at
their plant in Pasadena. Texas. He
plans to return to his former posi
tion following a few days spent
with his parents in Canton.
He lias a nephew, Lt Jack
Blythe. who is now discharged,
after serving as a bombardier in
the Pacific.

Private Bill Ray, U. S Army In
fantry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde
II. Ray. Jr., is enroute to Europe,
where he will serve with the army
of occupation. Pvt. Ray entered the
service in June of this year and
is attached to a communications
group.
Pvt. Ray entered the service
while a student at the University
of Georgia and was inducted at
Fort Bragg. He took his basic train
ing at Camp Blanding, Fla., and
from there was sent to Camp Pick
ett, Va., prior to being sent overseas.
