Haywood Chapter
Red Cross
Saluted On WWNC
The Haywood County Chapter of
American Red Cross was saluted
Saturday, November 24th, at 6:15
to 6:30 p. m. over radio station
WWNC in the initial program of a
series of five broadcasts on the
role played by Western North Car
olina Chapters in the Red Cross
program at home and overseas.
This honor was rendered to the
Haywood County Chapter in recog
nition ol' its outstanding work in
claims. Three other chapters of
Western North Carolina, Cherokee.
Canton and Transylvania, were
also cited on the program.
The salute to the Haywood Coun
ty Chatper came at the end of an
interview on Red Cross services to
veterans. The interview empha
sized the need of greater numbers
of workers to carry on this ever
expanding service.
The broadcast pointed out that
many men already are out of uni
form, and it .s the pleasure and
privilege of the chapter to serve
Ihem. All returned veterans may
count on this chapter to gie them
all the help possible.
The Red Cross is ready to help
veterans and their families in mak
ing out their claims for govern
ment benefits, in advice on employ
ment and vocational training, and
nany other problems of civilian

Three Haywood
Students Members
Mars Hill Glee Club
Three Haywood county students
are members of the Mars Hill Col
lege Glee club which has 109
voices under the direction of Mrs.
Elizabeth Logan Souther. In the
Haywood group are La Verne Rush,
bass of Ciyde, Irwin Burgin, tenor
and Lyle Coffey, bass, both of
Waynesville.
The club made its first appear
ance of the season in a concert on
November 14 and will appear in a
number of other concerts on the
campus during the year. In the
spring the group is expected to
make a number of brief tours.

Pfc. Willard Plemmons
Discharged From Army
Pfc Willard Plemmons, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Moter Plemmons,
of Hazelwood, was discharged from
the armed forces on November 19,
at Fort Bragg. He had entered the
service in April. 1943. and was in
ducted at Fort Bragg, taking his
basic training at Fort Jackson.
Pfc. Plemmons had served over
seas for one year, on duty in
Fiance. Belgium. Holland and Ger
main. He was attached to the 35th
Infantry Division and served with
the First. Ninth and Third Armies.
At the time he entered the serv
ice he was employed by the TVA
at Fontana Dam.
Pfc: Plemmons is entitled to
wear the European theater ribbon
with three battle stars; the Purple
Heart for wounds suffered on De
cember S, 1944. the Good Conduct
medal and the Victory medal.

Served 15 Months
In Pacific Theater
Leonard Ruff, Seaman first class,
who was formerly employed by
the Unagusta Manufacturing plant,
has been discharged from the serv
ice, at Shelton, Va.
Seaman Ruff after Induction at
Camp Croft was sent to the Great
Lakes Naval Training Center for
his boot training and later attended
a gunnery school, after which he
was sent to San Francisco.
He was assigned to duty on a
transport and served 15 months in
the Pacific theater.

Home For 26-Day Leave
After 16 Months On Sea
Bobby Green, Seaman first class,
son of Mrs. M. C. Green, who en
tered the navy in February, 1944,
as a volunteer, while a student at
the local high school, is home on
a 26-day leave.
Seaman Green enlisted in Ashe
ville and was sent tc Camp Peary,
Va., for his boot training and from
there sent to Norfolk, and there
assigned to a transport. He was
taken to South America and there
caught his ship USS Omaha, to
which he had been assigned.
He served 16 months in the At
lantic and Mediterranean theaters.
When his leave is completed here
he will report to Raleigh for his
next assignment.
Seaman Green had one brother
in the service, Pfc. Marion Green,
who was killed in action in Ger
many on March 24.
