This honor was rendered to the Haywood County Chapter in recog nition ol' its outstanding work in claims. Three other chapters of Western North Carolina, Cherokee. Canton and Transylvania, were also cited on the program. The salute to the Haywood Coun ty Chatper came at the end of an interview on Red Cross services to veterans. The interview empha sized the need of greater numbers of workers to carry on this ever expanding service. The broadcast pointed out that many men already are out of uni form, and it .s the pleasure and privilege of the chapter to serve Ihem. All returned veterans may count on this chapter to gie them all the help possible. The Red Cross is ready to help veterans and their families in mak ing out their claims for govern ment benefits, in advice on employ ment and vocational training, and nany other problems of civilian We. Three Haywood Students Members Mars Hill Glee Club Three Haywood county students are members of the Mars Hill Col lege Glee club which has 109 voices under the direction of Mrs. Elizabeth Logan Souther. In the Haywood group are La Verne Rush, bass of Ciyde, Irwin Burgin, tenor and Lyle Coffey, bass, both of Waynesville. The club made its first appear ance of the season in a concert on November 14 and will appear in a number of other concerts on the campus during the year. Willard Plemmons Discharged From Army Pfc Willard Plemmons, son of Mr. and Mrs. Moter Plemmons, of Hazelwood, was discharged from the armed forces on November 19, at Fort Bragg. He had entered the service in April. 1943. and was in ducted at Fort Bragg, taking his basic training at Fort Jackson. Pfc. Plemmons had served over seas for one year, on duty in Fiance. Belgium. Holland and Ger main. He was attached to the 35th Infantry Division and served with the First. Ninth and Third Armies. At the time he entered the serv ice he was employed by the TVA at Fontana Dam. Pfc: Plemmons is entitled to wear the European theater ribbon with three battle stars; the Purple Heart for wounds suffered on De cember S, 1944. the Good Conduct medal and the Victory medal.
