The Victory Loan drive at St.
! John's School has reached a total
of $23.575 .00. In a contest started
among the different departments
of the school, the high school is
now leading with a total bond pur-
I chase of $16,450..10.
The Victory Loan tlrive at St.
John's school began October 29
and will last through December 8.
Charts are posted in each class
room to keep the students inform-
i ed on the dally progress of the
drive.
The total war bond purchases by
St. John's School to date are $120,-
153.70.

Sgt. J. Howard Bryson
Has Arrived In States
Sgt. J. Howard Bryson. who has
served in the European theater for
the past 20 months, lias arrived in
the States and is now at Fort
Bragg. He entered the service in
May, 1942 and was inducted at Fort
Jackson and was sent overseas in
October, 1943
Sgt. Bryson- was attached to the
333rd Engineers and was stationed
in England prior to duty in France
and Germany. At the time he
entered the service he was em
ployed by Smith Transfer Co.
Sgt. Bryson is entitled to wear
the European theater ribbon with
five battle stars, a unit Presiden
tial citation and the good conduct
medal.
During his absence his wife, the
former Miss liuby Bowles, has con
tinued her work here as county
public health nurse with the Hay
wood public health department.
When Sgt. Bryson is discharged,
he and Mrs. Bryson will make their
home in the Massie Apartments.
Hokab. Minn. Solomon Shaw
ley, 89, and his 74-year-old bride
are setting up housekeeping here
after a honeymoon in Ohio and
Indiana. Mrs. Shawley has eight
living children while her husband
has only four living of his original
twelve.

Discharged From Service
Charles Garrett, MMR 1c, son
of Mrs. George Garrett, of Taynes
ville, who entered the service in
April, 1943, has been discharged
from the service. He was induct
ed at Camp Croft and from there
sent to Williamsburg Va , for his
boot training.
From the latter he was trans
ferred to Endicott, R. I., for ad
vanced training and then to Port
Hueneme. Calif., and then sent
overseas where he served 24
months in the Pacific theater with
the Seabees. Most of the period
he was stationed in the Philip
pines. He was discharged from the
Naval Personnel Center at Charles
ton, and is entitled to wear the
Asiatic-Pacific theater ribbon,
Philippine Liberation medal, Amer
ican Defense, and Victory medals.
At the time he entered the service
he was employed by the American
Enka Corporation as an electrician.

Chicago Edward Bogan of Au
rora was recently presented with

1,000 pounds, by a relief agency.
Edward had worn out one bicycle
and many pairs of Shoes bringing
in 30,000 pounds of clothing for
Russian War Relief.
