THUBSPAY, DECEMBER THE WATNESVHXK MOUNTAINEER r PAGE EIGHT Second Section Road Mishaps In State Show Sharp Increase Lately First 10 Months Of Year Shows An Increase Of 26 Per Cent In Highway Accidents RALEIGH Highway accidents in North Carolina are on the march again. The State Department of Motor Vehicles said that there was a 26 per cent Increase in fatalities on state highways and streets in Oc tober of this year as compared with the same month in 1944. A total of 77 persons were killed and 436 injured this past October, while 61 were killed and 436 In jured in October last year. The department reported that during the first ten months of 1945, more than 5,000 accidents were listed, in which 564 persons were killed and some 3,000 injured. During that same period last year, there were over 4.000 accidents recorded, with 512 persons killed and more than 2,000 injured. This is an increase of more than ten per cent for the ten-month period. Commissioner of Motor Vehicles T. Boddie Ward, said that the "pathetic part of this report is that practically, if not all of these accidents could have been avoided through careful, efficient and courteous driving." He pointed out that as long "as motorists continue to drive carelessly and recklessly witli a total disregard to the safety of themselves and others, the tragic toll of human life will con tinue to be exacted. "It would seem." he added, "that the living would eventually learn from the mistakes of the dead and maimed, but unfortunate ly their story must be told by others."
