Used as an auxiliary to propel ler drive, the jet propulsion will utilize formerly wasted exhaust gas heal and will add 20 miles an hour to cruising speed of the twin engine, 40-pnsscnger planes, made by Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corp. American Airlines will use the new planes as supplements to its four-engine fleet, and for flights of less than 1.000 miles in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Cruising speed will be around 300 miles an hour. Rules Announced For New Tobacco Allotments The closing date for filing appli cations for new grower tobacco allotments has been set for Janu ary 31. according to an announce ment by H. C. Francis, chairman of the county AAA committee. A new farm means a farm on which tobacco was not produced in any of the five years from 1941 through 194fi, but on which to bacco will be produced ,!n 1946, it was pointed out by Mr. Francis. An application for an allotment shall be filed with the county com mittee prior to February 1, of this year, unless the farm operator has been in the armed services, in which case such application shall he filed prior to February 1 or not later than sixty days following the date of his discharge, which ever is later, according to Mr. Francis. A tobacco acreage allotment shall not be established for any new farm unless each of the following conditions have been met; The farm operator shall have had experience in growing the kind of tobacco for which an allotment is requested cither as a sharecropper, tenant or as farm operator during two of the past five years in the case of Hurley tobacco; except that a farm operator who has been in the armed service shall be depend ent on the farm covered by the application for his livelihood; the farm covered by the application shall be the only fann owned or operated by the farm operator on which any Hurley tobacco is pro duced and no kind of tobacco other than the kind for which application for an allotment is made will be grown on such farm in 1948. AT PATTON MILITARY SERVICES Fourth of New Recruits In Army Now Overseas WASHINGTON Almost a quar ter of the more than 300,000 men who have signed up in the army's two-month recruiting campaign are overseas, the War Depart mnet said recently. Up to Dec. 7. a total of 304.(102 enlistment had been made, includ ing 43,007 in the week ending on that date, the Army disclosed. Officials expressed pleasure over the rale of enlistments, but s;,id they would not attempt to project this rate into the future because of various unforeseeable facto'-s. The Army hopes to have its man power at 1 .(500.000 by next July. This figure would include men en listed as well as draftees. York, of Pigeon road, wlio returned from the European theater two months ago has re ceived his discharge from the army and is now n student at North Car olina State College, where he was a member of the senior class prior to volunteering in the service. Young York, who held the rating of sergeant at the time he was discharged, was attached to the 3rd Division of the 30th Infantry of the 7th Army.
