THE LITTLE DAUGHTER OF ONE OF GOVERNOR CHERRY'S FRIENDS here in Raleigh received a box of candy from him. In the rush of piling up the various pres ents, nobody noticed that one of the pieces of candy the one wrap ped in gold in the center of the box was missing. The big boy in the family was accused of taking off with it, and it was not until the parents happened to look on the back of the card that the secret was discovered. There was a note scribbled in gubernatorial hand writing: "I ate one piece to see if this candy was all right. It won't hurt you RGC." He had run out of the manu factured Christmas cards, so he drew a neat little Christmas tree in one corner of the plain white card just to make everything all right. IT IS RUMORED IN RALEIGH THAT WAKE FOREST RECEIVED $20,000 for that 'Gator Bowl game. Had it not been for this post season battle, the Deacons would like have ended the season around $10,000 in the red. Although Wake played some big-time teams, they were all away from home except the Duke and Presbyterian games. The Wake Forest stadium was not full at the Duke game, and the Presbyterian runaway attracted only a handful. MORE BOYS AND GIRLS WILL BE IN COLLEGE IN NORTH CAROLINA in the next two years than at any other time, on record. Girls' schools have been chock full for the past three years, and the G.I. Bill of Rights is sending vet erans to college by the hundreds. It now looks as if no school in the state will have enough dormi tory space for next fall's crowds. Registrars who have been able to take it easy for the past four years are now going completely insane trying to look after the mobs that are descending upon them every day. The number of students at State College is expected to go to 5.000. There is reason to expect that the Chapel Hill unit of the University of North Carolina will have at least 5,000, and Duke 5,000. No more than one-third of the student body at Wake Forest will be able to reside on the cam pus, and until new buildings are erected at the Baptist school, many students may have to commute from nearby towns. North Carolina has never ex perienced such a rush for educa tion, and the college officials that are smart will make plans with their own buildings and those in the neighborhood to care for the multitudes that will soon be with them. extra Victory Bond and 'A the boys home. THEY SAY THAT SENATOR JOE BLYTHE OF CHARLOTTE CAN SUCCEED the late Joe Ervin in Congress if he really wants to do it. Also prominently mentioned is former Mayor Ben Douglas of Charlotte, who would probably be much more receptive to the idea than BIythe.
