Mr. and Mrs. McKinley Gibson
01 Canton, have been notified by
the secretary of the navy that their
son, Lewis Gibson, seaman second
class, who was reported missing in
action on March 1. 1942. is now
listed as dead. The letter 01 Secre
tary Forrestal read as follows:
On February 27. 1942 the Lan
ley. while en route to Tjilatjab.
Java, from Fret-mantle. Australia,
was bombed by enemy planes when
about 74 miles south of Tjlatjab. ,
"Survivors of the Lansley were
picked up and taken aboard two
of the escort vcsiI On the early
morning of March 1. 1942. the sur
vivors of the Lr.nyley. including
the wounded were transferred to
the L SS Pecos w hich was headed
for Freemnatle. Australia, later
that same day. carri- s based enemy
dive bombers attacked and sank
the Pecos
The I'SS Whipple intercepted
the rii.-tres signal tro.-ti the Pens
and arrived at the sci ne of the dis
aster where n proceeded to pick
up more than 300 .-urvivors. While
this rescue was in prot're-s. a sub
marine detected on the in-mediate
vicinity was attacktd l t!ie Whip
ple with depth charges.
Although the outcome of the
attack was not known, the Whip
ple continued to search the are?
and pick up seatteied survivor
before leaving for Freeoantio.

anc-ed training at Camp Pickett.
Va.. before being assigned to over
seas duty.
Pvt. Henderson is a graduate of
the Canton high school and was
employed at Miami Reach at the
time he entered the service.
