S. Navy, was recently discharg ed from the service at Camp Shel ton ,Va. He entered the service as a volunteer in 1942, while a stu dent at the Waynesville high school. Ho was sent to Great Lakes for his boot training and then to the Gunnery School at the Naval Base in Norfolk, where he was later as signed to sea duty aboard the USS Sims, for service in the Atlantic. After serving in the Atlantic Theatre he was sent to the Naval Training center at Long Beach, Calif., and upon completion of the courses there was assigned to the L'SS Dutton, and was sent to the Pacific, where he served for two years. . Young Scruggs is entitled to wear the American theater ribbon, the European theater ribbon, Phil ippine liberation ribbon, China Ex peditionary medal, Purple Heart (having been wounded on Okinawa on May 27, 1945), Victory Medal, and the Pacific theater ribbon with four battle stars. Son of L. R. Scruggs, of Hazel wood, young Scruggs has two bro thers who have served in World War II, Master Sgt. Milford Scrug gs,, who is serving in the European theater and Sgt. Glenn Scruggs, discharged, who served for three James G. Smathers Discharged From Navy At Charleston James G. Smathers. Seaman first class, who has served in the navy for the past 19 months has been honorably discharged from the service, according to information received from the Charleston Sep aration Center. Seaman Smathers is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Smathers, of Waynesville. and lias to his credit eight months sea service in the Atlantic theater. The Haywood County Methodist Youth Fellowship Council met at the First Methodist Church here on Monday night and made plans for the March meeting to be held at the Clyde Methodist Church on March 4, C. C. Poindexter, adult counselor, was authorised to secure an outside speaker for the pro gram. The host Fellowship will conduct the devotional and serve refresh ments. At the meeting banner will be awarded to the lotnl Fel lowship having the highest percent age of attendance. A book will be awarded to the local Fellowship showing the best efficiency record for the past three months. Effi ciency blanks are to be turned in at the beginning of the meeting. The president was authorized to order 150 song books- for the Fellowship. Miss Jessie Hipps was selected as chairman of the com mission on recreation and leisure to fill out the unexpired term of Mrs. Caroline Plemmons, resigned. Plans for the youth revival to be held at Lake Junaluska, the latter part of March, were also discussed during the evening. Euzelle Robinson En Route Home From Pacific Theater Euzelle Robinson, son of Jim Robinson, of Waynesville is one of many army veterans returning to the States aboard the U. S. S. Drew, an attack transport of the "Magic Carpet" Fleet, according to information received from Pearl Harbor. The ship lea Saipan on January 30, and was scheduled to arrive in San Pedro this week. The U S S. Drew is one of the attack transports which with cargo ships and landing craft, maintained con tinuous supply lines to fighting forces across the Pacific. 9 LUM'fUJ elk-Hudson Co. 4 Just Received Daivd E. Warren Of Canton Enlists David E. Warren, of Canton, has enlisted in the Army Air Forces, according to information received from the Asheville Recruiting Sta tion. Warren is the son of Chester W. Warren, of Canton. James C. Arnold Stationed In Italy Promoted To T5 James C. Arnold, who is sta tioned in Italy, witli the "Spear head" 351st Infantry Regiment of the 88th "Blue Devil" Division, has been promoted to the rank of Technician 5. Ho accomplished his duties as first cook to the satisfac tion of his superior officers, it has been announced by regimental officers. M. B. Reeves, Jr., S 2c Discharged From Navy M. B. Reeves, Jr., Seaman second class, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Reeves of Clyde, Route 1, was re cently discharged from the navy at the Separation Center, Charles ton, S. C. Seaman Reeves entered the serv ice on May 18, 1944, and has served a total of 21 months, with 13 of them on sea duty. His wife, the former Miss Nan Liner, has made her home here during the time he years in the Pacific theater.
