New Wage Schedules
The Western Union Telegraph
company is now paying retroactive
wages to local employes represent
ed by the American Federation of
Labor, and also, by special decision
of the company, to all employes
not in collective bargaining units,
it was announced today by Helen
M. Lengyel, local manager of the
company.
Retroactive wage payments to

Capt. C. C. Carpenter
Discharged From AAF
Capt. Clarence A. Carpenter, son
of Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Carpenter,
of Canton, has been discharged
from the service at Fort Bragg.
Capt Carpenter entered the ser
vice in March, 1942, in Asheville.
He served overseas from October,
lf)4:i to October, 1944, as a four
engine pilot and operations officer
uith the Air Transport Command
in the China-Burma-India theater
of operations. His last army air
force station was with the Fourth
Ferrying Group, Ferrying Division,
Air Transport Command, in Mem
phis, Tenn.
He hold the Distinguished Flying
Cross, air medal, presidential ci
tation, China-Burma-India theater
of operation ribbon with one bat
tle star, American theater ribbon,
and Victory medal. He completed
lOti trips over the famed Himalaya
Hump, with a total of 365 hump
hours. He is a graduate of the
Canton high school and attended
I'.revard College and Blanton Busi
ness college.
Prior to entering the service he
was employed with the Atlantic
Slates Motor Lines as accountant.
He plans to go to medical school in
Nashville. Tenn.
