How Jesus' Friends Responded
HIGHLIGHTS ON THE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON
By NEWMAN CAMPBFXL
(The International Uniform
Lesson on the above topic for
April 14 is Mark 1:16-20; 5:18-20;
10:46-52; Luke 5.27-32; John 3:26
30, the Memory Verse being Luke
9:81, "I will follow Thee, Lord.")
HOW DID Jesus' friends respond
to Him ? Today's lesson is on that
theme.
"Now as He walked by the sea
of Galilee, He saw Simon and An
drew his brother casting a net into
the sea; for they were fishers.
"And Jesus said unto them,
Come ye after Me, and I will make
you to become fishers of men.
"And straightway they forsook
their nets, and followed Him."
A little further went Jesus, and
He saw James, son of Zebedee and
John, his brother, who were in
their boat with their father, mend
ing nets. Jesus called to them and
they Immediately left their father
and followed Him.
Two of these men had been dis
;fplea of John the Baptist, and he
had called their attention to
Jesus as the Lamb of God. They
had gone home with Him after
that and talked for hours, being
convinced that He was the Mes
siah. Jesus knew that His mission o.i
earth would not last long; that He
would die and that it would be
necessary to leave trained men be
hind to write the story of His
ministry and to carry on His
work of teaching and healing. So
He gathered these friends and pu
pils around Him.
"Most Beautiful Water"
By the way, the Sea of Galilee
has been called '.'the most beauti
ful body of water In the world,"
and it was on its shores and in its
vicinity that most of His teach
ing and miracles were performed.
On its uninhabited eastern shore
He retired to escape the multi
tudes. The sea was a lake 12 miles
long and six miles wide at its
greatest width.
In earlier lessons we have read
of the man possessed with devils
who would not let him rest, but
caused him to break chains and
fetters and to roam among the
tombs, crying, and cutting himself
with stones. The demons that pos
sessed him were cast out by Jesus,
and entered a herd of swine that
immediately ran into the sea and
were drowned.
This man, now sane, although
probably bewildered and afraid,
followed Jesus to His ship when
He was planning to go away, and
wanted to go with Him. Jesus for
bade h.m to do so, but told him
to go home to his friends and tell
them what the Lord had done for
him. This he did, and people mar
veled. After being in the city of Jeri

When Jesus and His disciples came near
Jericho, a blind man named Bartimaeus,
sitting by the roadside, begged Him to
give him his sight. Jesus said, "Thy
faith hath mnr1p thpp vvVmlp "
cho, Jesus and His disciples left,
and as they walked along, a blind
beggar sitting at the side of the
read called to Him, "Thou son of
David, have mercy on me." Those
present told him to hold his peace,
but he would not, and Jesus asked
what he would have of Him?
"Lord, that I might receive my
sight," answered poor Bartimaeus,
and Jesus said to him, "Go thy
way; thy faith hath made thee
whole."
St. Luke tells us of Jesus going
forth and seeing a man of the
name of Levi, who was apparently
a customs house keeper, "who
took the tax on goods that moved
in and out on the caravans and
on the boat route." His Hebrew
name was Matthew. Jesus must
have studied this man, for He said
to him, "Follow Me." And without
a word, Levi left all his work and
the living that he was making
thereby and followed the Lord.
Levi's Class Outside the Pale
Levi's class was not recognized
by the religious leaders of the day,
but Jesus knew him as a disciple,
and Levi was so happy at what he
had done that that night he gave
a great feast in his own house,
and there was a great company of
publicans and others present.
The scribes and Pharisees, how
ever, seeing this, murmured
against the Master, asking why He
and His dcsciples ate with "pub
licans and sinners." Jesus' answer
was:
"They that are whole need not
a physician; but they that are
sick. I came not to call the right
eous, but sinners to repentance."
The last reference of our lesson
really should come first, for it is
about John the Baptist, when he
was still alive, even before his im
prisonment, and calling attention
to Jesus as the Lamb of God.
Some of John's disciples came
to him saying that He to whom
John had borne witness was bap
tizing, and "all men come to
Him." implying that they did not
like it because John's following
was less than that of Jesus. John
reminded them that "A man can
receive nothing, except it be given
him from heaven," and "Ye your
selves bear me witness that I said,
I am not the Christ, but that i am
sent before Him."
He was not the bridegroom,
John said, only the bridegroom's
friend, "which standeth and hear
eth Him. rejoiceth greatly because
of the bridegroom's voice; this my
joy therefore is fulfilled.
"He must increase, but I must
decrease."
Thus John the Baptist, Jesus'
cousin and great friend, sup
pressed any possible feelings of
envv, and uttered these noble
words that put Jesus first, where
He is to remain In all our hearts.

And The Bible
The Bible is the word of life.
I bee that you read it and litid
this out for yourselves read,
not little snatches here and
there, but Ions passages that
will really be the road to tin
heart of it. You will find it
full not only of real men and
women, but also things you
have wondered about and have
been troubled about all your
life, as men have been always:
and the more you read, the
more it will become plain to
ynu what things are worth
while and what are not, what
things make men happy loy
ally, richt dealings, speaking
the truth, readiness to give
everything for what they think
their duty, and, most of all,
the wish that they mav have
the real approval of the Christ,
who gave everything for them
and the things that are guar
anteed to make men unhappy
selfishness, cowardice, greed,
and everything that is low and
mean. When you have read
the Bible, you will know that
it is the Word of God, because
you will have found it the key
to your own heart, your own
happiness, and your own duty.

It is surprising how much work
we can do. what loads we can carry,
what problems we can solve, when
there is peace in the heart. An
astonishing amount of human .'ii

of poorly adjusted living. When
we fail to lubricate the machinery
of life, the process becomes even
more laborious.
We recognize this principle in

we immediately
investigate. We
do the same thing with those other
machines which we use in our
daily alTairs.
But when it comes to our milli
ner of living, we are utterly in
consistent. We allow a great por
tion of our energy to be dissipated
uselessly. For example, look at the
amount of energy wasted in anger
and irritation. Added to this is
often other damage. I have some
golfing acquaintances who ever so
often break a good club in a fit
of temper over a poor stroke. You
can recall other examples. To
those standing on the side-lines,
such actions seem utterly silly.
Think of all that good nervous
energy consumed in a lit of anger
and ill-temper, not to mention the
other damage done.
Life is like a machine: it must !
he kept in repair and properly
lubricated. It is surprising how
much appreciation will do to oil
life's machine. A smile and a good,
hearty laugh is also a good lubri
cant. And the peace of God in
the heart reduces friction to a
inimiium. releases good energy for
conservative work.
