F PAGE SIX '(Second Section J THE, WAYNESVILLE MOUNTAINEER Slale Democrats Endorse Administration Policies Prohibition Referendum Resolution Defeated At State Meeting; The North Carolina Democrats, in session in Raleigh Thursday, adopted a complete and compre hensive set of planks in a platform. The platform endorses the state and national administration and promises to carry out the Roose velt and Truman policies. The planks established party policy on the following questions: National affairs the party praised President Truman's do mestic and foreign policies and his continuance of the program of international cooperation advo cated by Franklin D. Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Congress the party commend ed the activities of the North Carolina delegation in congress. General Assembly The party lauded the accomplishments of the last legislature. Stale administration The con vention endorsed the administra tion of Governor Cherry since it took office last year. Finances Declaring the fiscal condition of the state to be sound, the party pledged a continuation of "a financial prudent and eco nomically progressive govern ment." State teachers and employe The retirement allowance for both categories was considered inade quate and the convention promised to increase the income they re ceive when they retire from serv ice. Education 1 Lie party pledged its support to improving the state's educational system. Child health The party advo cated a comprehensive health pro gram that would insure to every school child that his physical de fects were detected and correct ed in time. Highways The convention went on record as favoring preferential treatment to the state's secondary, or farm-to-market" roads. Health The convention en dorsed the medical care commis sion established by the last gen eral assembly and the objectives of its program for medical and hospital care for the people of the state. Agriculture The convention urged that steps be taken to in crease the prosperity and improve the living conditions of the state's agricultural population. Labor The convention pledged its continuing friendship to the "just aspirations of labor." Anderson, son of Mrs. Callie Anderson, of Canton, R.F.D. No. 1, who was discharged on April 9 of this year, has re-enlisted in the Army Air Forces. James M. Dayton, son of Mrs. Juanita Dayton, of Canton, who served for thirty-seven months in the service and received his dis charge on October 8, 1945, has re enlisted in the Engineering Corps. Billy L. Greene, son of Mrs. Liz zie Greene, of Lake Junaluska, who served for thirty-seven months and was discharged in January of this year, has re-enlisted in the regular army. commended the Cherry adminis tration for promoting the indus trial progress of the state. Conservation and development The convention recommended con tinued protection for the state's natural resources and opposed the separation of the game and fish division from the board of conser vation and development. Pblic welfare The convention spported the principle that ade quate financial assistance should be given to those persons unable to support themselves. A resolution introduced in the platform committee, calling for a state-wide referendum on the liquor issue, was defeated. The convention took no stand on the questions.
