Mountaineer Completes
Plans For Giving News
On Night Of The Primary
The Mountaineer has com
pleted plans for giving the
primary election return in
front of the court house here
on the night of May 25th.
A large board will be erected
in front of the building, and
flood lights directed on it from
several angles, so the large
Irtters and figures can be read
from the street.
A public address system will
be used in announcing the im
mediate returns for each can
didate as each precinct reports.
The totals will be kept on the
large board at all times.
The plans are similar to
those used the past 15 years
by The Mountaineer in giving
this service oh each primary.
As many as 5,000 people at one
time crowded the court house
yard and Main Street to get
the news when the candidates
were running neck and neck.

I will carry all 12 counties in the
district, and not just 10 as the ar
ticle points out. 1 have just come
from Graham, and I was in Bun

counties in the district.
The article is as follows:
"REDDEN The Congressional
race in the 12th District has moved
into high gear, and observers are
looking for a close vote there dur
ing the May 25 primary.
"Word from the 12th is that Mon
roe Redden of Hcndersonville, who
is opposing the incumbent, Con
gressman Zebulon Weaver of Ashe
ville, is claiming that he will carry
all of the 10 counties in the dis
trict except Buncombe and Graham.
"On Redden's 'sure list' are
Cherokee, Clay, Haywood, Hender
son, Jackson, Macon, Swain, and
Transylvania.
"ELIAS Although he doesn't
expect to carry Weaver's home
county of Buncombe, Redden is
pretty sure that he will get at least
a third of the votes there.
"Redden's campaign manager in
Buncombe is Don Elias of Ashe
ville, one of the top figures in the
Western North Carolina political
machlae headed by E. C. (Deacon)
Greene of Ashevllle.
"DEACON Although the ma
chine in past years has backed
Weaver, the Deacon Is solidly be
hind Redden in the dirrent race,
even though he Is leaving most of
the work to Elias.
"Deacon Greene entered the hos
pital several weeks ago, suffering
a relapse from an illness of recent
years. It is understood that he
plans to come out with a public
statement in behalf of Redden
after leaving the hospital.
"VETERANS No one seems to
know right now whether the sup
port of Buncombe County veterans
will fall to Weaver or to Redden.
"Veterans in that county are well
organized this year and they are
offering a slate of officers to oppose
Incumbent members of the General
Assembly and incumbent county
officials."

KEP. ZEBULON WEAVER
... Zebulon Weaver's record is one of a
steady, conscientious and able public
servant. He does not believe in or
employ spectacular methods of cam
paigning. At this moment Mr. Weaver
is at Washington tending his duties in
the House of Representatives. His goal,
as always, is service to his country and
to the people of the Twelfth Congres
sional District. It would be a most
serious misfortune to this District to
sacrifice, for the promises of a politic
ally ambitious opponent, all that he
represents in seniority, diligence, appli
cation to duty and proven merit.
Mr. Weaver has announced his wish to retire from
public life at the end of the next Congressional term of
office, in 1948. His worth to you in the two coming
years must not be discounted or fogged by glib assur
ances that this is the time for a change.

Notice To Primary
Voters
On the 21st day of March. KMC,
I save notice through The Moun
taineer of my candidacy for the
House of Representatives in the
next General Assembly from Hay
wood County, and called the at
tention of our voters to certain
phases of my personal record,
namely, that I am a native of Hay
wood, born and reared at Pieenn
Gap between Wayncsville and
Bethel; that I have been a tax pay
er in Haywood for 40 years or
more; that I am a life-loiiK Demo
crat; that I have had experience
in the Lecislature of North Caro
lina, having served one session
from Wake County and two regular
and two special sessions from
Brunswick County; that I served
in World War I as Y.M.C.A. secre
tary, and in World War II as ap
peal agent for the local draft board
and as Rc-cmploynient Agent for
the government; that I have taught
3 one-teacher schools in Haywood,
served as principal of high school
in Wake County, as city superin
tendent in Elizabeth City, and in
Lumberton and as county super
intendent in Edgecombe County
and in Brunswick County.
Since makng my announcement
I have asked my opponent. Hon
orable Glenn Palmer, to explain
why he enacted the following laws
without notice to his constituents:
to create the oflice of County Man
ager and to fix the salary of same
at $1,500.00 per year; to pay the
Assistant Clerk of the Court out
of the tax funds of the county in
stead of out of the fees in the
clerk's office as heretofore; to fix
the salary of the County Manager
at $2,400.00, an increase of $JO0.O0;
to fix the salary of the Tax Collec
tor at $2,500.00, an increase of
$400.00; to fix the salary of the
Assistant Clerk of the Court at
$1,500.00. an increase of $360.00;
to fix the terms of county officers
at four years, an increase of two
year. My opponent, Mr. Palmer,
has failed to make any explanation
as to why he passed these laws
without letting the people know
before hand that they were going
to be passed. By refusing to an
swer the questions propounded to
him and by his failure to make
some explanation of the passage of
these laws, my opponent has for
feited his right to the votes of the
people in the Haywood Primary,
and I urge them to vote for me.
Pursuant to my promise in my
notice, I am now announcing my
platform as follows: (1) I will not
pass any laws affecting Haywood
County without first notifying the
citizens and giving them a chance
to be heard; (2) That I will do all
In my power to increase the per
centage of highway funds appro
priated for construction and up
keep of rural roads leading from
homes to schools and church and
farm to market roads; (3) I will
do by best to help promote public
education in Haywood; (4) I will
favor and help to provide a more
adequate health program in Hay
wood; (5) I will favor and help
to promote agriculture in Hay
wood and the State of North Caro
lina; (6) I will favor adequate sup
port of our state departments, of
state supported educational insti
tutions, of blind institutions, of
insane asylums, and of our cor
rectional institutions; (7) I will call
for suggestions on county legisla
tion from barbers, cosmeticians,
teachers, lawyers, doctors, minis
ters and any and all organized
groups and from individuals in
Haywood; finally, I promise to look
after the interests of industrial
plants and labor organizations on
a fair and impartial basts.
For the reasons set out herein,
I earnestly solicit your support in
the May Primary, and I will serve
all the people of Haywood openly
and to the best of my ability.

Who
Is Politically Ambitious
A political advertisement appearing in the
Asheville newspapers in behalf of the perennial
candidacy of Zebulon Weaver sneers at Monroe
Redden as "a politically ambitions opponent."
Really, who is politically ambitious? Let's
look at the record.
Zebulon Weaver started running for public
office in 1906, when he was 34 years old, and he
has been at it ever since.
He ran again in 1908
He ran again in 1910
He ran again in 1912
He ran again in 1914
He ran again in 1916
He ran again in 1918
He ran again in 1920
He ran again in 1922
He ran again in 1924
He ran again in 1926
He ran again in 1928
He ran again in 1930
He ran again in 1932
He ran again in 1934
He ran again in 1936
He ran again in 1938
He ran again in 1940
He ran again in 1942
He ran again in 1944
He is running again in
1946
AT IT AGAIN. In fact, there has not been a
general election in Buncombe County in 40
years that did not find Zebulon Weaver seeking
some nomination from the Democratic party.
Zebulon Weaver is the most persistent office
seeker and the most chronic office-holder that
Buncombe County and Western North Carolina
have known in the Twentieth Century.
Monroe Redden is seeking a nomination
from the Democratic party for the first time in
21 years of loyal and effective service to the
party and section.
Is it a crime for a deserving young Democrat
to dare oppose Zebulon Weaver?
The Constitution of North Carolina declares:
"Perpetuities and monopolies are contrary to
the genius of a free people and ouqht not to be
tolerated."
