And India Reach Lend-Lease Accord WASHINGTON The United States settled Lcnd-I.ease accounts with India last week and agreed to turn over to that country be tween $425,000,000 and $440,000. 000 in surplus Army and Navy equipment. After several months of nego tiations, the State Department an nounced that "no dollar payments would be required in the settle ment . The accord wrote off approxi mately $500,000,000 to $(H)0.000, 000 in American Lend-Lease to India and gave India: 1. About $216,000,000 in mili tary supplies left over from Lend Lease stocks. 2. About $117,000,000 in civilian Lend-Lease goods. Building Permits In Nation Drop Off In April NEW YORK The total of April building permits in 215 cities was $240,722,327, against $426,951,606 in March and $61,161,846 in the same month of 1945, Dun & Brad street reported. With thd exception of March the total was the highest for any month since July, 1929, the busi ness research firm said. Unpre cedented volume in March was re corded when builders rushed to file permits in anticipation of the Government restriction order, it was added. Burley Of State Averaged 39.4c A Pound Last Season Gross sales of burley tobacco in the nation during the year just closed totaled approximately 606, 000,000 pounds at an average of 39.4 cents per pound or a moss sales value of $238,800,000, W. P. Hedrick, tobacco marketing specia list with the State Department of Agriculture, said Monday. "However, adjustments of resales will reduce the actual cash receipts to growers, and total income from burley will be much below the all-time-high cash receipts of $260, 300,000 for the 1944 crop," said Hedrick. Peach Crop Is Up 47 Per Cent In N. C. Peach production in North Caro lina is estimated at 3,200,000 bush els or 47 per cent more than was produced last year, it is announced by Russell Handy of the State De partment of Agriculture. "It should be pointed out, how ever, that this is an estimate of production for the entire Stale and not just the commercial crop," said Handy. Last year, there were parts of the State which had almost com plete failure that resulted in a lower estimate than would appear from the size of the crop grown in the Sandhills. The crop in the Sandhills promises to be about the same as was produced in 1945. Thrifty War Widows To Get Food Gifts LONDON Six thrifey British widows are in for a pleasant sur prise when the postman gives a double knock at their doors some day within the next few weeks to deliver parcels from Queensland, Australia. The women have been chosen for their thriftiness and for the burden they have horn during the wars years. The husband of each was a war laiamy ana eaen nas three children. Their names have been sent by the Ministry of Pensions, Wilfred Paling, to a group of Queensland women who will reward them with parcels of Australian food luxuries.
