Patrol Starting this week and continu ing for a six-weeks period, a Safety program sponsored by the State Highway Patrolmen, in a nation wide plan inaugurated by the Na tional Association of Chief of Po lice, will be carried on, according to an announcement by O. R. Rob erts, state highway patrolman. The program will be put into effect throughout this section of the state in the following counties, in addition to Haywood: Jackson, Swain, Macon, Clay, Cherokee and Graham. A thorough check will he made of all safety equipment on cars, including lights, brakes, horns, windshield wipers, and tires. Driv ers licenses and registration cards Will also be checked. Any vehicle with a width of over 80 inches operated without clearance lights is in violation of the law, Mr. Roberts pointed out, as the law calls for red lights in the rear and amber in front. In the checking over of motors there will be some cases in which recommendations will be made for repairs while other violations of safety will be cited to court. The program will be put into ef fect by the state highway patrol men in cooperation with the coun ty and town law enforcement of ficers in the effort to cut down on accidents on the highways. The check-up will be made in ! the same manner as that of the brakes on motors carried on last ! year by tie state highway patrol-! men. Annual Poppy Sale Will Start At Plants Today The annual Poppy sale sponsored eacn year by the American Legion Auxiliary will begin today in the industrial plants, wheie the flowers made by the veterans will be sold by members of the Legion. Poppies will be on sale at Dayton Rubber plant. A. C. Lawrence Leather cuinpany, Wellco Shoe corporation, I'nagusla Manufacturing company, and others, according to Mrs. J. C. Brown, chairman. Saturday morning, Mrs. Brown will maintain headquarters at Hen derson's ('inner where she will be assisted by Mrs. Leo Muriel, Mrs. Crawford, Mis. Robert Livingston, and Mrs. Hurst Buigin. Thirteen Tried In Mayor's Court Monday Afternoon Onh two arrests were made si nee Monday by the city police department, one charged with vio lation of the prohibition law and the other for public drunkenness. The offenders will be tried in mayor's court this afternoon. WCTC Alumni To Meet Tonight To Plan Memorial A meeting will be held of the Alumni of Western Carolina Teach ers College here on Tuesday eve ning, the 28th at the First National Bank, according to Jonathan H. Woody, president of the Alumni Association of the college. A simi lar meeting will be held in the Canton area for alumni in that section of the county at the YMCA on Tuesday, June 4th. The meetings are being held for the purpose of having friends and alumni discuss plans for reach ing an agreement on the Hawyood County quota or Haywood county's part in raising funds for the erec tion of a memorial to the men who served in World War 11 and made the supreme sacrifice. There were twenty-five Western Caroloina men killed in World War II, with three from Haywood and in the latter group were Willie Messer, Elmer Stahlman, of Ster ling, and Cecil Young, of Wayncs-ville. "In the fifty-seven years of its history, Western Carolina Teach ers College has never asked the public for any substantial gift, though small gifts have been made from time to time for scholar ships," it was pointed out by Mr. Woody, president of the Alumni Association. "Now our friends have a chance to contribute toward a substantial structure which will remain through the years as a memorial to our students who paid the su preme sacrifice. We are confident our friends will make a generous response," Mr. Woody continued. Dr: C. N. Sisk To Address Nurses Club At Meet Tonight Dr. C. N. Sisk, district health director will address the Haywood County Nurses club at their regu lar monthly meeting to be held tonight at H o'clock in the Nurses Home of the Haywood County hospital. Miss Frances Thompson, presi dent, will preside. All members of the club are urged to attend. Legion Here To Sponsor Service Sunday Morning A memorial service hnoring the Haywood county men who have -served in the armed forces will be held at the First Methodist church at 11 o'clock Sunday, May 26, at the morning hour. The service is being sponsored by the local post of the American Legion, according to D. F. Whitman, newly-elected commander. Rev. Paul Townsend, veteran of World War II, and pastor of the church will deliver the sermon. Advancement and retirement of the colors and the sounding of Taps will be part of the service, with the members of the post partici pating. The latter will be given following the roll call of those who have paid the supreme price. The public is invited to attend the'service.
