THE WAYNESVILLE MOUNTAINEER FRIDAY r PARP! TllfiTTT Third Section Y ' f v it" ... i t IMMBMMBMBBBPHBHIsMiMsWMiMiliM m- -1 ...p.,.... - T THE BOOK CORNER Reading From Left To Right With FRANCES GILBERT FRAZIER Now that wo have the primary behind us, and the war fears as sauaged for the time being, we can relax and allow our minds to absorb lighter things. Such as the reading of a good book. But while we still have the war in mind it's too soon to entirely pass it into history we might well read the new book by Ralph In gersoll, "TOP SECRET." Here we can learn the uncensored, inside story of how the generals planned and ran the invasion of Europe and the battle of Germany. It tells of decisions that saved thousands of lives . . . also decisions that added agonizing months to the war. It is truly a "now-it-can-be-told" story, told with no political ax to grind and no official record to up hold. Ralph Ingersoll is now back at his old position as editor of the New York newspaper PM, after having been in the American army from 1943, as staff reporter, then staff captain and later rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Too, im mediately after the invasion, he was an American observer attached to General Montgomery's staff. Mention the name of W. Somerset Maugham to any of the literati and they will immediately become in terested, for there has never been an uninteresting novel come from his pen. And "THEN AND NOW," his very latest, Is no exception. Since our high school days we have heard of the Borgias and Machiavelli and in this novel hy Maugham all of the followers of this interesting era are paraded before our mental eyes in fascinating array and garbed in the best literary dress possible. It is a story of the Renaissance, and interestingly set out for our delectation. It is a story that can not be adequately reviewed for so much of its beauty lies in its gifted selection of word age. One of the most talked about books of the present popular trend is "PAST ALL DISHONOR" by James M. Cain. The hero is a young Confederate spy in Virginia City, the great mining town, at the height of its boom period. The woman for whom he conceives a wild and desperate infatuation is one of the camp's sporting girls in every way a dangerous creature. She is conscienceless, greedy and utterly irresistable. It is hardly necessary to say more when it is known that two of Mr. Cain's novels have reached heights of best seller class; for in stance, everyone knows "THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE," and then the novel made into a picture that gave Joan Craw ford the Oscar award for the best actress in pictures for 1945 . . . "MILDRED PIERCE." There are only 232 pages in this book but every one is crammed full with the most interesting reading you could ask for.
