The Waynesville Summer Play
ers, "The Theatre in the Sky", will
' open their season of five plays on
July 16th, with Rose Franklen's
famous comedy success, "Claudia,"
Maurice Geoffery, managing direc
tor of the group announced yes
terday. They will appear at the
High School Auditorium on Brown
Avenue.
Hailed as one of the outstand
ing comedies ol recent Broadway
seasons, "Claudia" ran in! New
York for over two years, was play
ed simultaneously by several road
companies, was produced in Lon
don, Paris and Sydney, Australia,
and then made into a motion pic
ture with Dorothy McGuire, crea
tor of the title role, and Robert
Young. ' It has been one of the
most popular plays in the Summer
Theatre circuit and was selected
by Geoffrey as the opening pro
duction here because of the uni
versal appeal of the Claudia and
David stories upon which it is
based.
The presentation here will fea
ture Phyllis Luis, charming bru
nette actress of stage and television
in the role of Claudia, with W.
Lawrence Benson as David and
Grace Shiner as Mrs. Brown. Miss
Shiner comes from Chicago where
she has played prominent parts in
a number of important productions
and Benson has had considerable
stage and radio experience in both
army shows during the war and
in civilian life since being released
from service.
The remaining plays to be pre
sented here, Geoffrey said, will
be "Ladies in Retirement," the
brilliant psychological mystery by
Edward Percy and Reginald Den
ham; Hcnrik Ibsen's most famous
drama, "Ghosts," with an all star
cast, and Molierc's satirical comedy,
"The Imaginary Invalid," with a
magnificent production of rich 17th
century French costumes and
scenery. The season will close
with "Post Road," a fast moving
comedy-mystery by Wilbur Daniel
Steele and Norma Mitchell, which
originally starred Charlotte Green
wood, the movie star.
Each play will be presented for
four nights, opening every Tuesday.
Rosemarie Thomas is in charge of
production activities and special
costumes -have been designed for
the presentations here by Elma
Ilene Geoffrey. The complete cast
of players, who will spend the
summer in Waynesville, will be
announced at an early date.
The Waynesville Summer Play
ers are sponsored by the Chamber
of Commerce and season tickets
for the series of five plays are on
sale at Watkins Chevrolet Com
pany, Chamber of Commerce,
Bradley's Store and Waynesville
Mountaineer.
Mr. and Mrs. Geoffrey and Mr.
Benson will arrive here today,

State Will Spend
Largest Amount
Ever On Schools
New Budget
Of $42,676,129
Adopted By State
Board Of Education
RALEIGH The State's partici
pation in the operation of public
schools for the ensuing fiscal year
will cost an estimated $42,676,129,
an all-time high topping expendi
tures for the fiscal year just clos
ing by $1,474,531.88.
Although the nine-month school
fund budget adopted by the State
Board of Education calls for ex
penditures of nearly $1,500,000
above those of the current fiscal
year, no salary increases are pro
vided for any school personnel. The
extra money will be used to em
ploy 602 additional teachers, to
take care of increased transporta
tion costs and increased costs of
operating plants, and to purchase
coal usually bought out of the pre
vious year's funds but which
couldn't be purchased this spring
because of the coal shortage.
In addition the $42,676,129 to be
spent next year for operation of
schools, the State's General Fund
will be called upon to pay out
somewhere in the neighborhood of
$3,200,000 for emergency salaries.
These emergency salaries, paid on
the basis of $120 a year to all teach
ers and State employes, were pro
vided by the 1945 General Assem
bly. Emergency salaries paid
teachers and other school person
nel during the current fiscal year
totaled $3,163,320.
The main increase in next year's
budget over the one for the cur
rent year comes in instructional
salaries, which totaled $34,011,085
during the year just ended. The
board has estimated that $811,496
more will be needed next year to
pay the 602 additional teachers to
be employed; $14,712 will be need
ed for salaries of six additional
classified principals; and $522,560
will be needed to take care of the
estimated increase in teachers
holding higher certificates and
other teachers entitled to higher
salary increments.
