This and previous authorizations make a total of 7,589 vacancies available to officers who have gone on inactive duty or terminal leave but who desire further active duty. War Department representatives Indicated that this number may be increased in the near future. Although the War Department is authorized to recall officers to active duly without their consent during the emergency, it is desired to fill these vacancies with volun teers. Accordingly, quotas have been established to meet the needs of each of the branches of service whose personnel problems have been made acute by the rapid de mobilization of the Army. Volunteers under this program may elect to serve for an unlimited length of time or for a 12, 18, or 24 month period. Howell, owner Shop and Office Under Henderson's Corner The Cherokees This summer through our boys and girls reading club we have learned much of the history of tin Cherokee Indians. Many of our readers have been interested in the excellent photographs show ing the Reservation, which were loaned to us by Mr. Sam Gilliam, principal of the Cherokee School. Our adult borrowers arc reading about Indians too and the rapid circulation of these books would outshine some of the Best Sellers. What do you know of the Chero kee History? Its heroes? Tsali iCharleyi is one of the most cherished heroes of the Cher okees. II was Tsali who sacrificed his life so that the Cherokee refu gees of the removal of 1838 might remain in the region of North Carolina. Junaluska was chief of the tribe and was a great warrior, he fought in the battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1814. John Ross in 1826 was made chief of the Cherokees. He spent much of his money helping the Cherokees in building schools, etc. Sequoyah is celebrated as an illiterate genius who invented the Cherokee Alphabet. He was born in the Cherokee Village of Tucke secgee Tow n in Tennessee near old Fort London on the Tennessee River. He fought in the war of 1812 against the hostile Creek In dians. Late in life many honors came to Sequoyah for his name was given to the great trees of California. i Bill Stone Of Canton Is Lions Zone Chairman ' W. J.
