Win of Season
While Enka Switches
Four Pitchers
Enka and Hazelwood scrapped
throughout nine innings of play in
what turned out to b a hitting
duel before the game ended with
Hazelwood a bare one run ahead.
17-16, to keep their undefeated
record after 15 games of Industrial
League competition.
Sam Lane was good for four hits
his five times at the plate, Glen and
Gordon Wyatt each got three to
head Hazelwood's halting record,
while the visiting righlfielder, Dick
Allen, rapped put lour for five to
lead Enka. Bud Blalock stuck to
the moupd all through the game
while Hazelwood fought for what
seemed at first a lost cause until
they got hot in the fourth fining,
ran home six men, and barely kept
ahead the remainder of the game.
Enka switched four pitchers dur
ing the game, starting off with
Loren Williams, bringing Ken
"Lefty" Ledfard in during the
fourth, Bryant in the sixth inning,
and letting "Spider'' Cooper finish
the game.
Both teams were loose in the
field, the locals making four errors
and the visitors six.
Enka racked up four runs in the
first, a,nd got hot again in the third
to lead 7-2. Then Hazelwood turned
on the heat during the fourth,
tallying six, and when Glen Wyatt
smacked out a double to score two
of these the Enka team changed
pitchers. Hazelwood got hot again
In the fifth 7id sixth innings, add
ing nine more runs.
Then in the seventh the Rayon
ites gpt ten men at bat despite
two early put-outs, three men were
batted home and three scored on
errors. This brought the score to
17-16, and both teams cracked
down on defense to allow no more
scores during the remainder of the
game.
This week-end Hazelwood travels
to Ecusta and on August 24 plays
at Martel Mills.
