The recommendations as passed, listed as the special ways in which teachers could help through their prolessional orgaiuations the fol lowing: 1. To urge their governments to ie all possible aid through inter national co-operat ion. 2 To (onlnhule directly in money and niatei ials. ,3. To co-operate in the collection, allocation and distribution of as sistance. The teachers wi re urged to gel their pupils to collect such items as c'lithing. shoes, paper, pencils, toys, and physical education equip ment. In discussing the need of this in one of the committees' ineeliniis between Conference ses sions. Antoni Wojcirki of the Po Teachers t'nion stressed the possibility of helping children of W ASH 1 NC.TON Housing Expe diter Wilson W. Wyatt reported that former service men actually are getting between 85 and 05 per cent of veterans' homes built so far, hut warned that the bousing shortage will get worse instead of better this winter. There have liccn reports recent ly that discharged service men were not getting ail the housing supposedly being built for veter ans But Wyatt lold a news confer ence that a recent check showed the veterans were not being froen out of homes What is more, he added, they are gelling' good houses. A preliminary survey h Hie Federal Housing Administra tion showed Hint only a small frac tion of Gl homes are Jerry-built. Wyatt said he still is confident of success for his program, which envisions 2,700.000 homes for vet erans even though the task has proved "lough as hell." He said 387.100 homes of all kinds have been completed so far this year. He hopes thousands more will be ready this fall. Rut in a monthly report, be pointed out: "Cnnstaritly rising demand al present more than offsets the ad- litional accommodations and not until after the turn of the Near vcill be demand begin lo level off". Wyatt said he would support a reported reeomniendal ion by Sen. .lames M. Mead. (D , N Y.). that President Truman call a special session of Congress to act on the Wagner - Ellender - Taft lone range housing bill. Wyatt also said price fags on new GI houses are too high lor the average veteran Meanwhile W. A. Ilryanl. chief of the Civilian Production Admin istration's consumer durable goods division, said a veteran who suc ceeds in buying one of Walt's houses may have trouble furnishing it. Bryant said hardwood production has doubled, a fact now showing up at furniture factories. Hut de mand is two to three times greater than 1941. "Prospects are that all-wood fur niture will be short for another scar or two." Ilryanl said in an interview lie said upholstered furniture is in somewhat better supply Wyatt reported that til, 300 homes more fortunate lands to share hat 'hey now w.-r-le while helping oilier -ehoolchildren "One p. nth v.nni basketball almost readv to be (b -aided b an American high ... hod cm he repaired h a Polish ehoul and made lo serve two or three wars longer." he said, "and it may lie the only piece of play ( ipnp menl the school has " Aid to teachers in the foi m of money for rest, travel and i.iobs 'ional study, and to students for scholarship, was also recommend ed. All such aid, if was suggesled, should. be channeled throu h UNESCO. The Conference further urged its members to strengthen the hands of UNESCO through more active support on the part of their teachers' associations "back home" and passed as resolutions state ments of policy that "active mem bers of the teaching profession" should be included in all national delegations to UNESCO and on all UNESCO committees. UNESCO's projected program of teacher and student exchange, of efforts to stamp out illiteracy in every coun try throughout the world, and to help lift the standards of education, as described to the Conference by Dr. Howard Wilson, Deputy Execu tive Director of UNESCO . s Pi e paratory Commission, were voted enthusiastic support, by the dele-gales. of all kinds were finished during ,lul Ten thousand ol these were permanent hemes stal led l his year, hriii'.mg to 50 Oit'l lot.il homes of this tvjic aeluailv begun and fin ished under the derails Housing Program.
