Nomination of Assembly Majority Leader Irving M. Ives for the post of U. S. Senator is strongly backed by Gov. Dewey's strongly built organization although the forces of MaJ, Gen. William J. Donovan continue a last-ditch stand. (International Sou7idphoto) NEWS from HOLLYWOOD Hollywood is expanding South of the Border, where KKO has al ready practically completed a new fourteen-stage studio in the Churu busco suburb of Mexico City, at a cost of 20,000,000 pesos, or $4, 100,000. The first of a series of bilingual films is scheduled to no before the cameras in January. The Mexican ventures of other companies, while less ambitious than RKO's, are indicative of Un favorable labor and taxation con ditions which prevail below the border. For example, a studio carpenter in Hollywood makes $2.25 an hour; in Mexico he gets 7 pesos, or $1.40 a day. The Mexi can income tax is only 10 per cent, without any surtaxes, we're told. In making a bilingual film, two directors will be used, one Ameri can and one Mexican, and two pairs of stars, with the remainder of the cast being recruited from among Mexico's bilingual actors Bilingual production will lengthen shooting schedules by about 33 per cent, but the difference in labor costs and salaries will not make the finished product as expensive as in Hollywood. Graeie Field is to do all the singing and narration for Walt Disney's J'Wind in the Willows," which will be an all-cartoon ver sion of the popular English classic by Kenneth Graham, Eric Blore will furnish the voice for Mr. Toad, Pat O'Malley for Cyril the horse and Colin Campbell for the mole. Jiminy Crickett, pall to Pino chio, will be seen as a leading character in another of Disney's features, "Fun and Fancy Free.' This picture will consist of two parts. The First will be "Mickey and the Beanstalk" and "Bongo," based on Sinclair Lewis' story of a bear who escapes from a circus and goes adventuring about the country. Ladies, if you don't go to see "My Empty Heart," when it comes to town for any other reason' you'll surely want to see Rosalind Rus sell strutting through the film in 24 different gowns, designed for her by Travis Banton. Are they stun ning! Anne Baxter's wedding bouquet was so designed that, when she cast it to the crowd it could be divided into three parts and three lucky girls could share it. When Constance Bennett paid $30,000 for the story "Smart Wo man," by Leon Gutterman and Ed win Westgate, she proved herself just that. Producers want it for the stage and Ken Dolan wants to package it for the air "The Adven tures of a Smart Woman." Need less to say, Miss Bennett, will net a great deal more than her original investment of $30,000. During the filming of "Anna and the King of Siam," a young man by the name of Chetanakovn Vor avan asked for and got the job as technical adviser. What the studio didn't know at the time was that he was the grandson of King Mon gut who figured in the story and that the young man got the job in order to be sure that his family was treated right in the picture. He was highly pleased with the way the film turned out. When Twentieth Century pro duces "The Hollywood Story," it will satisfy the public's curiosity over the inside workings of the movie industry. Using its own studio, it will employ authentic sets and characters whenever pos sible, scenes will be shot in the actual play spots of the movie crowd ,such as Ciro's and Mocambo, and everything will be as realistic i L COM Transactions Braverdam Township Homer V.
