There was a decided improve ment in the entries over last year in the quality of the work done by the girls and the interest in general in the contest, it was learned from Miss" Helen Smith, as sistant county home agent, who had worked with the girls in prep aration for the contest. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert .1. Dickie man of Dalton, III., left Wednesday after spending a few days with Mr, and Mrs. Walter Crawford Mr. Dicklcman is chief of the Fire Department for the city of Dalton. Stanford Massie Host To Juvenile Music Club This Afternoon The newly organized Juvenile Music club, composed of children under 12 years of age and directed bv Miss Stephanie Moore, will meet Ibis afternoon at 3:30 o'clock with Stanford Massie at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Massie on the Asheville road. The group is sponsored by the W ax ncsv illo Music club. At the meeting today officers will be elected and plans perfected for federating with the state music Federation of Music clubs. Miss Frances Hawkins Collins, of New- I port News, Va., and Canton, to Albert Henry Rhodes of Waynes ville, son of James Arthur Rhodes of Hendersonville. The marriage took place in Clay ton, Ga., on Sunday, September 29th. The bride wore a grey suit with black accessories and her cor sage was of red roses. Mrs. Rhodes is a graduate of the Canton high school and attended business college in Asheville. Mr. Rhodes served with the army air corps and entered the service in 1939. A native of Haywood county he was one of the first Haywood men to be sent overseas, where he served for two years in the Euro pean theater. Wounded he was returned to the States to Moore General hospital and discharged charge from the service he has from this point. Since his dis been employed by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway as locomotive fireman. He was recently given a year's leave of absence froni his work. Mr. and Mrs. Rhodes are mak ing their home at the Hotel Lefaine while in Waynesville. October Meeting Of CAR Held With Linda Sloan, Wednesday The October meeting of the ! Joseph Howell Society of the Chil dren of the American Revolution was held on Wednesday afternoon with Linda Sloan. She was assist ed by her mother, Mrs. Ben Sloan, and her grandmother, Mrs. S. H. Bushnell, in receiving her guests. Mrs. J. Harden Howell, adult di rector, presided. The flag was advanced by Har riett Gibson and Stanford Massie assisted by Anne Hardin and Cary Howell. Lane Prcvost gave the pledge of allegiance to the flag. Mrs. Howell read a letter from the president of the State Society of the CAR and Linda Sloan read a letter from the Junior president of the North Carolina Society. Allen Hart told a story of inter est to the members. During the business session a report was given by the program committee com posed of Allan Hart, Lane Prcvost and Linda Sloan. Mrs. Howell explained the re quest from the state that each of the older members write an article on a member of the CAR, DAR or some soldier, and send in their picture, which will be used in the state memory book. After the program the members enjoyed games on the lawn led by Elizabeth and Mary Barber. Spe cial guests of the afternoon were Aaron Gibson and Skipper Sloan. Announcement was made of the next meeting to be held the first Wednesday in November, with Lane Prevost as hostess. ACCOMMODATING MARYVILLE, Mo. Rural mail carriers are accommodating per sons, as proved by Raymond Barry, rural mail carrier, who recently found a half dozen eggs, a letter and a note in a box on his route. The note read: "Mailman, I didn't have any change this morning so would you sell this half dozen eggs to get a stamp for this letter? With what change is left, bring me about six postcards and the rest in 3-cent stamps. Thanks." He obliged. Martin To Have Paper At UDC Meeting Mrs. O. Roy Martin will present the paper this afternoon at the October meeting of the Haywood Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy which will meet with Mis W. F. Swift at her home on the Fail view road. Mrs. J. R. Boyd, president, will preside. Mrs. Martin will have as her subject, "Salem College and the Confederacy.'' During the business session the election of officers will be held, with Mrs W. A. Hyatt serving as chairman of the nominating com mittee. All members are urged to attend. Rev. Joe Shackford, pastor of liamscur Mills Methodist church, who is attending the Western North Carolina Conference in Asheville, was the guest during the week of his mother, Mrs. John Shackford, at Branuercrest. Frances Roberts Wedded In Clayton To Wilce McGaha Mrs. Walter Roberts of Dellwood, has announced thc marriage of her daughter, Miss Frances Roberts to Wilce McGaha, also of Dellwood, son of Mrs. Caldonia Hannah. The vows were taken in Clayton, da., on August 23, in the presence of a small group of friends. The bride wore a blue suit with white accessories. She is a grad uate of thc Waynesville Township high .school. The bridegroom is a veteran of World War II, having served for 36 months in the army. The couple will make their home in Waynesville. Merrill Green To Give Program At Music Club The initial meeting of the club year of the Waynesv ille Music club will be held Friday night at The I Lodge, wilh the president, Mrs. John Tax lor, presiding. The meet ing was scheduled to be held last Friday but had to be postponed to this week. While the meeting will be de voted primarily to business a short program xull be given by Mtss Merrill Green, pianist. Mrs William Ira I.ee is serving as program chairman for the com ing xear and will announce her plans and the course of study for the club. Plans will also be discussed rela lixo to the district meeting to be held on October 19th in Bryson City, which will be attended bv a large delegation from the club. Dunham House Closed For Season On 30th The Dunham House, summer tourist hotel lu re, closed on Mon day, September 30, for the 1946 season Donald Dunham, owner and manager It'll Tuesday for his home in Jacksonville, Fla. From the opening until the closing day the hotel had a capacity crowd.
