came short as a result of heavy
shipments to famine areas abroad.
With world food needs during the

the control until it is certain .that
an export goal of 400,000,0(0 bush

The Agriculture Departs nt has
petitions of the milling and bakery
industries for decontrol of flour,
semolina, farina, bread and bak

the OPA law, it must act tomor

and other bakery products. It has
nearly two weeks to act on the

8 Point Program
Adopted By State
S. S. Conference
GREENSBORO The Board of
the North Carolina Conference for
Social Service in a meeting here
today adopted an eight-point legis
lative program and appointed new
officers preliminary to inaugurating
its annual program when the Gen-
was the case with livestock and
meats.
The official said the petitions
themselves may be denied tomor
row, but that the OPA and Agricul
ture Department jointly may issue
formal decontrol orders later in
the week.
A decontrol petition may be
granted only if the affected com
modity is plentiful. The official
noted it cannot be said that wheat
is available in ample supply in view
of the world situation.
The tentative decision to lift ceil
ings from wheat products was said
to be based on the facts that (1)
wheat is free of ceilings, (2) short
ening, one of the major materials
used in bread and bakery products,
was freed of controls last week, and
13) President Truman last week di
rected the OPA and Agriculture
Department to speed up the decon
trol program.
Despite the government's inten
tion to hang on to rent controls,
the National Association of Real
Estate Boards said in a statement
that a campaign to abolish them
will be renewed.

Miss Edith Casey, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. John Casey of
Waynesville was married to Rev.
S. N. Rogers, son of Mr. and Mrs.
L. L. Rogers, of Cullowhee, on
Thursday evening, October 3rd, at
the Mt. Olive Baptist church on
Pigeon street.
The pastor, the Rev. J. H. Smith
performed the ceremony. The
church was decorated with ever

Mrs. Marian Kemp Howell was
in charge of the music. James
Gibbs sang "I Love You Truly" and
Mrs. Lucile Ramseur sang "Be
cause." The bride who was given in mar

with short puff sleeves, and a
fitted bodice and her veil was
shoulder length. She carried a
white prayer book to which was
attached an orchid.
Mrs. Christine Allen, sister of the
bride, was matron of honor and
she wore a gown of white net
with a bouquet of gladioli and as

Bing Crosby and Bob Hope are

claiming the boys clowned too
much time for their shows. Work

waste less and work more.

recently received court approval,
Margaret O'Brien will receive $2,

or $300,000 before the end of her
contract in 1949. Not bad for a
nine-year-old.
George Murphy's young son,
Dennis, recently went to church
alone, with money George gave
him for the collection plate. George
was surprised to sec him return

The boy's explanation was: "The

A reception was held at the home
