THE WAYNESVILLE MOUNTAINEER Mrs. Ned Howell, October Bride Given Shower By Aunt Monday Mrs. Hurst Burgin was hostess of a miscellaneous shower given at her home on the Dellwood Road on Monday evening as a courtesy to her niece, Mrs. Ned Howell, the former Miss Gladys Burgin, daugh ter of Mrs. Charles Burgin and the late Mr. Burgin. Mrs. Howell was married in Kentucky the last of October. The residence was arranged in bowls of white narcissus and ja ponica in rose shades and ferns. The bride upon arrival was pre sented with a corsage of white flowers. Contests featuring wedding sub jects were held with Mrs. Jimmie Boyd and Mrs. John M. Queen winning the prizes. A salad course was served and each plate bore a miniature candle holder with lighted taper as a favor for the guests. The many lovely gifts presented to the bride were brought into the living room in a parasol by Beck Jo Burgin, young daughter of the hostess. Mrs. Burgin was assisted in serv ing by her daughters Alice Marie and Becky , Jo. The guest list in cluded: Mrs. Chas. Burgin, mother of the bride, Mrs. Emmett Green. Mrs. McLean Rogers, Mrs. Noble Garrett, Mrs. O. Roy Martin, Mrs. John M. Queen, Miss Peggy Sue Burgin, Mrs. Jimmie Boyd, Mrs. Jess Crouser, Mrs. W. A. Bradley. Betty Jean Dotson Becomes Bride Of Stanley DeWeese Mrs. Hub Pressley, of Clyde, has announced t he marriage of her daughter, Miss Betty Jean Dotson to Stanley DeWeese. son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard DeWeese, of Canton. The marriage took place on Monday, November 25 at Clavton, Ga. Lucile Dayton Becomes Bride Kenneth Rogers Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Dayton of Canton, have announced the mar riage of their daughter, Miss Lu cile Retha Dayton to Kenneth Rog ers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cauley Rogers of Fines Creek in a cere mony which was solemnized on Sat urday morning, November 2, at 9:30 o'clock in the parsonage of the West Canton Baptist Church. The Rev. C. H. Greene, pastor oi the church pronounced the vows, using the impressive double ring ceremony. The bride was attired in a pink wool dress with which she wore brown accessories and her corsage was of pink roses. Mrs. Rogers was educated in the Canton High school. Mr. Rogers is a graduate of the Fines Creek high school and re ceived his discharge in March from the Navy, after serving for twenty- two months. He is now employee by the Champion Paper and Fibre company in Canton. Immediately following the cere mony, the couple left for a short wedding trip after which they will make their home in Waynesville. Juvenile Music Club To Meet This Afternoon The Waynesville Juvenile club will meet this afternoon with Nan cy Bischoff. All members are urg ed to be present. Mr. Sol Cohen music director at Sprindale school will be in charge of the program Miss Stephania Moore is adult leader of the club. Mrs. Hilliard Moody and daugh ter Roberta of Dellwood Road have returned after a two weeks visi, with friends and relatives neai Richmond, and Chase City anc Norfolk, Va. Marriage Is Announced - ? ; 'i I Mrs. W. A. Hyatt To Give Paper At UDC Meet Mrs. Will A. Hyatt will have the paper at the December meeting of the Haywood Chapter of the Uni ted Daughters of the Confederacy which will be held this afternoon at the home of Mrs. Noble Garrett at 3:30 o'clock. Mrs. Hvatt will review the con tribution of Haywood county to the War Between the States. Mrs. John M. Queen, president, will pre side. Reports of the recent general convention which was attended by several members in Jackson, Miss. will be given at the meeting. MISS EMILY GARRETT, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Edward Garrett, of near Reidsvillc. and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus H Blaekwell. of Wavnesville, whose marriage to Lawrence Green, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James B. Green, of Fayetteville, was recently announced by her parents. Mrs. Green has oiten visited her grand parents here and has many friends in this area. Miss Emily Byrd Garrett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Edward Garrett, was united in marriage to James Lawrence Green, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James B. Green of Fayetteville. The vows were spoken before he Rev. J. C. Swaim. pastor. For the wedding the altar of the church was decorated with baskets of white chrysanthemums and green ery interpersed with lighted tapers on floor stands. A program of nuptial music was rendered by Miss Frances Child ery, pianist, of Reidsvillc and while she played a medley of favorite airs, the candles were lighted by the ushers. J. O. W. Roberts, and Alva Ward, of Greensboro. Miss Jane Hopkins, vocalist of Reids- ville sane "One Alone and Be case", prior to the ceremony, and following the taking of the vows she sang "The Lord's Prayer" as a benediction. The traditional wed ding marches were used for the processional and the recessional. I The bride and bridegroom enter ' ed the church together. For her ; marriage the bride wore a dress of i orchid sheer wool made with long 1 sleeves, a jewel neckline and a : short peplum. She carried a hand ! kerchief which her grandmother t had carried on the occasion of her J marriage. Gibson Miss Opal Duncan, of Waynes ville, formerly of Spruce Pine, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Carl Duncan of Spruce Pine, be came the bride of Charles Gibson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Gib son of Waynesville on Monday af ternoon at 2:00 o'clock. The cere mony took place in the parsonage of the First Baptist Church here. The pastor, the Rev. L. G. Elliott pronounced the vows. For her marriage the bride wore a gabardine suit in royal blue and her accessories were in black. She wore a corsage of red rosebuds. Mrs. Gibson was educated in the schools of Hickory, where she made her home after the death of her parents. Mr. Gibson is a veteran of World War II, having served for two and one half years in the U. S. Navy. He volunteered in the Spring of 1943 and took his boot training at Camp Perry, Va. He was assign ed to sea duty and served for eight months in the Pacific theater. He was discharged in the Spring of 1946 and is now employed by the American Corporation at Enka The couple will make their home in Waynesville. Young Host Gives Party On Third Birthday Anniversary Master Leroy Roberson, son of Dr. and Mrs. R. Stuart Roberson was host of a party on his third birthday anniversary on Monday afternoon. He was assisted by his mother, and Mrs. Jim Kilpatrick, Mrs. Whitener Prevost, Mrs. James Harden Howell, Jr., Mrs. David Stentz and Mrs. Henry Davis. The Christmas motif was used throughout the party. The guests enjoyed several motion pictures af ter which games were played. Supper was served and the table bore a birthday cake with three lighted tapers. Each guest was pre sented with a favor. Those present were Lynn Kil patrick, Carey Howell, Gail Pilars ki, Agnes Roberson, Jack Prevost, Harris Prevost, Edwin Davis, Paul Davis, Jr., David Stentz, Jr., and Stuart Roberson. Dr. R. Stuart Roberson and young daughter Agnes Jane and son Stuart Roberson have returned from a visit to the former's mother in Charlottesville, Va. Mrs. W. F. Swift, and Mrs. David Stentz, and young son David Stentz, Jr. have returned from Shelby where they attended the marriage of Miss Mary Stentz, which took place on last Saturday Mrs. Jeff Garrett, of Reidsville, the former Miss Mary Blaekwell, of Waynesville is expected this week to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rufus H. Blaekwell. Company. The bridegroom is a graduate of tlie Fayetteville high school and attended the University of North Carolina. He is a veteran of World War II and served for three years overseas with the Naval Reserve. He now holds a position with the Consolidated Conditioning Corpor ation of New York and is located in Burlington.
