SMfion) THE WAYNESVILLE MOUNTAINEE Carringer Concert Drew Large And Appreciative Audience At St. John's An appreciative audience heard Walter Carringer, of Murphy, stu dent at Western Carolina Teachers college, winner of the first place in the contests recently held by the North Carolina Music Federation, in a song recital given at St. John's school auditorium on Thursday eve ning. The concert was sponsored by the Waynesville Music club with Mrs. John Taylor, president, intro ducing the singer. Mrs. Paul Ellis of Sylva was ac companist of the evening and Ar nold Shaw, pianist gave one num kr, Tschaikowsky's Concerto No. 1 in B minor. Mr. Carringer, who has a tenor voice of unusual quality, gave the following program: "Amarilli, Mia Bella," by Caccini; "Total Eclipse" from Samson, by Handel; II Mio Tesoro from "Don Giovanni." by Mozart; "Thanks Be To Thee" from "Israel of Egypt," by Handel; "Two Brown Eyes," by Grieg. Air from "Comus" by Arne; "Hamc," by Davies ia modern Scotch song, depicting the travel ler's yearning for home; "My Mes sage" by D'HardoIot; "Le Revc," from "Manon" by Massenet; "The Hills 1 Love." by Robert Frank fiarrett. of Dillsboro: "I Have Seen Dawn." by Warren; "Methuselah" by Sacco; and "Come to the Fair" by Martin. Cathey Give Party For Bride Mrs. David Stentz and Mrs. Joe Cathey were joint hostesses of a dessert contract party, and kitchen gadget show at the home of the former's parents. Capt. and Mrs. W. F. Swift on the Fairview Road on Saturday afternoon, honoring Miss Hilda Way, bride-elect of next week. For the occasion the residence was arranged in bowls of iris and other spring flowers in lovely com binations of pastel tJiadcs The hostesses were assisted in receiv ing by their mothers. Mrs. Swift and Mrs Clayton Walker Upon arrival the guests were served a delicious dessert which was followed by the playing of sev eral spirited progressions of con tract. County Medical Society Has Annual Dinner The Haywood County Medical Society held their annual dinner meeting at The Lodge last Thurs day evening with Dr J I. Reeves, president, presiding Dr W H McCall. of Asheville. was the guest speaker of the eve ning, illustrating his talk with col ored slides Dr. McCall is a vet eran of World War II with 30 months spent in the India theater. He told the group of the political, social and religious phases of the country's life and gave many in teresting personal experiences. Other special guests of the eve ning in addition to Dr. McCall were his wife, and Dr. and Mrs. Oren Moore, all of Asheville. Prior to the presentation of the program a brief business session was held Miss Bene Medford. who is a member of the sophomore class at Brenau college. Gainesville. Health Workers Hear Dr. Branch At All-Day Meet More than 150 delegates from 29 Western North Carolina counties attended the all-day meeting of the Western North Carolina Public Health Association at Lake Lure May 23, hearing addresses by lead ers in the fields of public health services. Dr. Ernest Branch, director of the division of oral hygiene, state board of health, Raleigh, spoke at the morning general session. Dr. H. C. Whims, Buncombe county health officer and president of the association, presided. Sectional meetings were held in the afternoon following a picnic lunch. Leaders attending included J. M. Jarrett, director of the division of Sanitary engineers, state health de partment; Robert L. Caviness. san itary engineer; E. C. Hubbard, principal sanitary engineer; Dr. R. E. Fox, director of the division of local health administration: B. J. Jessup. supervising milk sanitar ian; M. M. Melvin. executive vice president of the North Carolina Restaurant Association and former member of the North Carolina Res taurant Association and former member of the North Carolina state board of health, and Miss Helen Martikainen, health educator of the United States Public Health Serv ice, Richmond, Va. The group also rendered "My Mustache" and "The Lord's Prayer," by Mallote. Victor Jacoby, English teacher at Springdale school gave two read ing, "A Sonnet," by Edna St. Vin cent Mallet, after hearing a sym phony from Beethoven and a hum orous number, "Sin," by Rork Bradford.
