The North State conference foot
ball campaign will get underway
Saturday night when Tom Young's
Western Carolina Catamounts
tangle with the High Point Pan
thers in Memorial Stadium, Ashe-ville.
Coach Ralph James has been fol
lowing up last week's tussel with
the Duke junior varsity by concen
trating on the Purple Panther pass
ing attack, convinced that victory
Saturday lies over the air route.
Doped as the underdogs, the
Catamounts are in prime condition
to upset the bucket. Several Hay
wood county men will see action
in the opening game.
From Waynesville are Hugh Con
stance, Harry Jaynes and Jack Al
lison ,and Canton's Gene Grogan,
all conference end, and Frank
Hardin who are expected to take
the field for Western Carolina. :
The game will start at 8 o'clock.

'CAN THAT GAME'
IS FAIR WARNING
NEWARK, N. J. (AP) A park
policeman idly watched four young
sters toss around a can they had
found. Then he frantically halted
the game.
The can was labelled: "High ex
plosive. TNT, for frontline demolition."
I Practically a new first team will
be on the field for Coaches C. E.
j Weatherby and Carl Ratcliff, who
; topped off their final week of pre-
season practice with a night work
i out Wednesday and light exercises
yesterday afternoon. Gone are
nine ot the 4b starters wno
marched through 11 games untied
and undefeated, scoring more
points than any other high school
team in North Carolina.
Guy Sutton's Golden Hurricane,
due to their 14-0 loss last week at
the hands of Hayesville, will be
the underdog against the ' new
Mountaineers when the klckoff
whistle blows at 7:30 p. m. Still,
the Sylva eleven showed poten
tialities of holding their own, with
the work of Fullback Bill Cagle
and Bunigarner, a guard, standing
out.
Headed by their eo-eaptalns,
Hugh Caldwell and Ervin Shook,
the Mountaineers are eager to
show that they can carry on in the
style set last autumn.
The line, short of experience,
carries a little more weight than
it did last year, and will average
around 180 pounds. In at center
is 204-pound Dan Watkins, a steady
performer last year who has shown
an improving ability to sense his
opposition's tactics; considered one)
of the prime assets in the line.
Beside Dan stands another heavy
weight, Edgar Robinson and his
230 pounds; and the small but high
spirited Arch Early. The tackles,
Caldwell and Bill Owens, are all
tall and working well in their as
signments. Caldwell, the kind of
player Coach Weatherby says he
needs more of, is counted on to
provide the key offensive blocking
and has the speed and experience
to earn an all-state reputation.
Although Leonard Messer and
Buddy Morrison left some big
shoes to fill in the terminal spots,
Gibson and Shechan have been
showing improvement in their pass
snatching and defensive assign
ments and are expected to season
fast as the schedule gets under
way.
The backfield lacks the weight of
the line, ranging from the 150
pound quarterback, Shook, to
"Buck" Atkinson, the 170-pound
fullback: Richard Powers and Jack
Noland, both around 105. This
quartet is a smooth working com
bination In practice, and expected
to do as well against their foes.
In reserve strength the Moun
taineers lack experience, some
thing that will be overcome as
shortly as possible. The second
string has a big line In Gene Mit
chell and Gene Yarborough, ends;
Frank Poteat and Pink Francis,
tackles; Bud Arrington and Roy
Trull, guards; and David Price, cen
ter. The backfield drops sharply In
size; neither Charles Ray Burgin,
Sammy Wiggins, Winston Ensley
or Paul Franklin In the middle
weight class; and Ensley nursing
a bad leg that is likely to keep him
out of action tonight.
Warnings against overconfldence
have been issued by the coaches,
who know that the first game is an
important one to the team's mo
rale and will require all the hustl
ing the players can provide.
