Toll Fees
On Parkway
Deferred
Members of the Noi th Carolina
Park Commission and civic lead
ers here were elated over the news
that plans to impose, 'toll" tees on
the Blue Ridge Parkway in this
state and Virginia this season had
been called off.
The N. C. Park Commission, ot
which Charles Ray is chairman,
had entered formal protest to the
"toll" at a meeting in Washington
two weeks ago. Congressmen oi
the two states, as well as state of
ficials and newspapers had en
tered bitter protest to the proposal,
which would charge 25 cents a car
and $1 per year to use the Park
way. Secretary of the Interior King
instructed the Park Service to de
fer the fee plan this season.

Beer, Wine Vote
In 2 Counties
Halted By Court
Judge Alley Signs
Restraining Order
Pending Hearing
On Petitions
Elections on beer and wine
sales in Jackson and Avery coun
ties, scheduled for today, were halt
ed by legal proceedings on Satur
day, when Judge Felix E. Alley,
signed temporary restraining or
ders enjoining elections in both
counties, pending outcome of
hearings on the Jackson county
proceedings on the 12th and Avery
on the 14th.
In both instances, the temporary
injunctions were granted on the
legal technicality that the petitions,
requesing the election in these two
counties, did not conform with the
provisions of the 1947 statute pro
viding for local option on beer and
wine.
W. Roy Francis of Waynesville,
M. V. Higdon of Sylva and Frank
Ferguson of Waynesville represent
ed the petitioners in the Jackson
county proceedings.
While these proceedings probab
ly will block early elections on
beer and wine In these counties, It
is anticipated that other petitions,
drawn to conform with the statute,
will be circulated by groups seek
ing to ban beer and wine sales.
The 1947 General Assembly en
acted legislation authorizing local
option elections on beer and wine
upon petition of 15 per cent of the
qualified voters. This act also dou
bled the crown tax on beer and
directed that the increase of IV4
cents a bottle be distributed among
the counties and municipalities on
a population basis.
