The company was founded by Peter G Thompson, a Cincinnati Ohio, bookshop owner who saw the need lor better and cheaper paper l hat could be coated on both sides in one operation. Mr. Robertson said (he Champion Paper and Fibre ronipa.iy still feels "the imprint of Peter G Thompson's dynamic per sonality." About tlie time the Canton plant was founded, the Champion com pany acquired large spruce areas in l he Great Smoky Mountains, Mr. i'oheilson said. Remarking that the company iiad never hesitated to break wilh tradition when such action was in ,hc interest of progress. Mr. Robertson described the largest paper-making machine in the world, which he said is in opera tion in the Canton plant. The ma chine produces more than 1,000 feet per minute of 242-inch-wide paper, he said, adding that a S5.500.000 twin brother of the machine" had been installed in the past few months. He cited these two features of the company's industrial relations program: t 1 an age-service bonus ,v 1 1 ich gives workers a five per cent automatic wage increase for every five years of unbroken service up to 25 years, and i2 a production bonus, which he described as "a simplified profit-sharing plan." Evidence of the success of the firm's labor program is the fact that the wartime turnover amount ed to only eight-tenths of one per cent annually, in contrast to higher rates in many oilier plants, he said.
