Ezekiel told his people that the Lord was aispleased because the shepherds" or ptiets ot the eiled Israelites were gruwn rich, and lei the sheep " the common people, starve spiritually The good shepherd, Ezekiel said, seeks out his flocks where they are scatteied through the hifih mountains, prey to every wild beast ot the country, and feeds and cares for them The prophet cheered them by promising that God would take His scattered chil dren hack to their own land, would give them "clean hearts." and it would become as the garden of Eden. c.,... By NEWMAN CAMPBELL KZEKIEL'S PROPHECIES vvoie written, it is thought, be tween 505 and 585 B. C, when be, his people and the king, Je hoiachin, were exiled in Babylon. All the people were homesick and discouraged. T'u'y needed cheer ing (even as we of today), but they also should look clearly at the facts and see where at least part of the blame for their con dition lay. so thought Ezekiel. Ezekiel evidently did not be lieve in vicarious righteousness, and placed his emphasis on per sonal responsibility. He told his people plainly that they needed "a new heart." That phrase has a familiar ring-. After the dropping of the atomic bomb, Winston Churchill is reported to have said Unit "man must have a new heart," and a well-known Amer ican to have remarked that the world's thinking must undergo a "clean.sing and reformation" If we would survive. Like all the Old Testament prophets, Ezekiel repeated to his people only what the Lord told him. God came to him, he said, and asked what the children of Israel meant by the saying that "The fathers have eaten sour W hear many complaints of workers who demand large wages, but loaf on the job, with no sense of responsibility toward their em ployers. There are employers, too, who pile up huge profits, but who shirk their responsibilities to their fellow beings. We too, need "a new heart." Acknowledging these faults, we can do something about them, and win forgiveness through reformation. These are errors that parents and teachers should emphasize in their guid ance of children. The Lord also called Ezekiel's attention to the conduct of the priests, the shepherds of the ex iled Israelites. They waxed fat and clothed themselves in fine raiment, He complained, while those they were supposed to guide and comfort were neglected. The "sheep" were scattered, the prey of wild beasts, while the shep herds feasted and lived in luxury. That accusation too, we of the present generation may well take to heart. Many today are feast ing and reveling while millions starve. Thank Ood many more are aware of the sufferings of others and sharing generously with those In need, even at con siderable personal sacrifice. MEMORY VERSE "They shall know that I, fehovah their Cod, as with them." Ezekiel 34:30. grapes and the children's teeth are set on edge"? All souls are mine, the Lord saith, "as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sin Iieth, it shall die." If a man were just, doing that which was right and lawful, he would live, but h who oppressed the poor and needy, used violence in his dealings with his fellow men, was a robber, a shedder of blood, etc., would surely die. No one, not even his father, was re sponsible for his wickedness. "The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him." However, if the wicked turned from his sins, he would be forgiven, it was promised. That too, is a message for us. We should not blame all the con fusion and tragedy in the world on those who have gone before us. or on the wickedness of oth ers. We should search our own hearts and see what we have done to help bring about these condi tions. Are we broadminded ? Do we look upon every man as our brother, and treat hirr. as such ? The Jews still are scattered over the face of the earth, and those who are In exile in lands where they have lost all their possessions and are truly "dis placed persons," are homesick and heartsick, longing for homes and security. Ezekiel promised his exiles that God would take care of them, bring them together in their own land, where He would help them to make the land to blossom and bear fruit like the Garden of Eden. The closing verses of our lesson today tell the parable of the val ley of dry bones to which the Lord transported Ezekiel. As Ezekiel "prophesied" over them, the bones were assembled Into human skeletons, the skeletons were clothed with flesh, muscle, skin, etc., and the breath of life was blown into them by the four winds of heaven. When this latter was accom plished, there was a "great army," symbolizing the restora tion of a great nation. We of today are not looking forward to a great army or a great nation. We want a great world of brotherhood and justice, and that is the ideal to which we are working, with Cou's Vp. distributed by King Features Syndicate, Inc The Everyday Counselor -By- HEV. HERBERT SPAUGH, D. D. Empty barrels give out only noise. Don't forget that when you are listening to abusive language or administering it. A letter from a disturbed corre spondent presents a familar pic ture. She has been married tor more than 25 years. Her husband is irreligious, "cannot stand to hear the name of God mentioned; curses until it is almost unbearable to hear, and when I tell him to please stop, he tells me that it is his own home and he will curse in it all he wants to." In addition to this he has for years had periodic affairs with other women. This correspondent wants some sort of an answer to her problem. The answer is, "empty barrels." Just how manv emrjlv barrels are involved, I don't know. Quite evH dently the husband is one, being empty ol hpplntis, and If fighting ! against the inner call of Almighty God to lead a good life. How some men and women fight that call! Cheated in the Image of God, ev ery man has within him a divine spark which reaches out to contact its Creator. The only way to over come that upward urge Is to fight against it with a downward urge. The home itself may be another empty barrel. The husband may not find happiness and content ment there, and may be seeking It elsewhere. He may be craving at tention, and getting it by heaping abuse on his wife. Both husbands and wives try this trick In the home to get attention when it Is not given to them voluntarily. The wife herself evidently has some emptiness of spirit. If she was In full contact with the Lord, she would be able to work the prayer lv on hw feusbaaiL There is nothing like bringing God's power to bear, by remote control, upon one whom we de sire to lielp, but to whom we dare not speak about spiritual things. I would say that this home need ed some spiritual housecleaning. The place to begin is for the wife to start on herself. She may think she does not need it, but the fact that sne admits that she can do nothing for the profane husband, indicates that she does need some thing. Even if she does not lec ture him, nag at him, she is not bringing a positive influence for good to bear upon him. Evil can be overcome with good. Let her establish close communion with her Lord, give herself to heart searching prayer for herself and her husband, try letting her ac tions speak louder tha.i her words. Then let her work the prayer lever, and work It hard. REV. TATL'M RESIGNS Rev. Robert G. Tatum has ic- We Wish ,,. .... cion.irt 9C rafti,r tf rnna P .. .
