Labor Saving Increase
In 185S It took 38 hours and 45
minutes to produce an acre of corn.
Now it takes five hours and 31 min
utes. That the labor saving from
farm machinery has been progres
sive is shown by comparison with a
more recent year. In 1942 total
farm production was more than a
third greater than in 1919 although
there were 8.5 per cent fewer per
sons on the farm to accomplish it.
In 1942 each farm fed six more per
sons than 23 years before, and the
income per person on farms was 22
per cent greater. To have harveated
our 1942 wheat crop by the methods
of 1850 would have meant using
every able-bodied person in the
United States and also importing
millions of foreign hands.

Spahis is a term now applied to
certain Algerian and Tunisian cav
alry troops. It is a corps of Al
gerian native cavalry in the
French army normally serving in
Africa, half of whose officers below
the rank of captain and all of that
rank or above are French. It origi
nally was composed largely of
Turkish spahis serving in Algeria
at the French conquest in 1830. The
term applied to the irregular Turk
ish cavalrymen, who were from 1328
a formidable body in the army of
the sultan.
