More People Visit Smokies Than Any National Park Almost unknown until opening of the National Park a few years agif ithe Smokies already com prise the most-visited national park in America. Within the 440,000 acres of the park lies the largest remnant of the American wilder ness today, where nature has hoarded the richest treasures of the forests shrubs, trees, flowers, animals and birds. In the park are 16 peaks reach ing altitudes of 6,000 or more feet. A modern highway, terminus of the Blue Ridge Parkway, cuts across the park. Within its boundaries are 675 miles of foot a.nd bridle trails, including a long stretch of the 2,-000-mile marked Appalachian Trail. iMaine to Georgia). The park is a paradise for the j botanist, containing the largest virgin hardwood forest in the United States. Tree species num ber 150, plant life total 3,710 twice as many as on the whole I continent of Europe. In the sum j mer naturalist study trips are con ducted at regular intervals by park authorities. Already identified are 50 fur-bearing animals and some 1200 birds. While hunting is not permtited, 600 miles of trout streams arc open to fishing. New ly formed Fontana Lake offers aquatic sports. Facilities in the park itself are meagre, but there are camping and picnicking areas near the highway. The Eastern Cherokee reserva tion borders the park in North Car olina, and provides a goal for sightseers. The auditorium is always comfortable, as the two sides are open, alTordin an unobstructed view of the lake. Comfortable seats have recently been installed, and the staj;e and platform renovated. Modern sound equipment makes it easy to hear in all parts of the auditorium. New Church Being Built At Clyde Clyde will soon have a new Methodist church. Work is now underway and the construction promises to be very successful, ac cording to Boone Cagle, chairman of the building committee. The building will be of brick and granite rock. Take Highway No. 276 from Waynesville to Wagon Road Gap the top of the mountain as it cros ses Pisgah. Then turn to the right, and for five miles the Parkway runs on the ridge of the mountain, giving an awe-inspiring view of the thousands of acres of Pisgah National Forest below. The road is wide, not steep, and has long sweeping curves. The Parkway is not paved but has an excellent driving surface. Be sure to stop at Green Knob, for a 300-degree view of the whole area, lt is 20 milts to Wagon Road Gap, all paved A trip down the other side of the mountain to Brev ard is well worth your while, a distance of 20 miles.
