More People Visit
Smokies Than Any
National Park
Almost unknown until opening
of the National Park a few years
agif ithe Smokies already com
prise the most-visited national park
in America. Within the 440,000
acres of the park lies the largest
remnant of the American wilder
ness today, where nature has
hoarded the richest treasures of
the forests shrubs, trees, flowers,
animals and birds.
In the park are 16 peaks reach
ing altitudes of 6,000 or more feet.
A modern highway, terminus of the
Blue Ridge Parkway, cuts across
the park. Within its boundaries are
675 miles of foot a.nd bridle trails,
including a long stretch of the 2,-000-mile
marked Appalachian Trail.
iMaine to Georgia).
The park is a paradise for the
j botanist, containing the largest
virgin hardwood forest in the
United States. Tree species num
ber 150, plant life total 3,710
twice as many as on the whole
I continent of Europe. In the sum
j mer naturalist study trips are con
ducted at regular intervals by park
authorities. Already identified are
50 fur-bearing animals and some
1200 birds. While hunting is not
permtited, 600 miles of trout
streams arc open to fishing. New
ly formed Fontana Lake offers
aquatic sports.
Facilities in the park itself are
meagre, but there are camping and
picnicking areas near the highway.
The Eastern Cherokee reserva
tion borders the park in North Car
olina, and provides a goal for
sightseers. Those who want to go
j hack Into the coves and see how the
j real Indian lives should obtain reli-
able guides in the village of Cher
okee. Ecuador is the only South Am
erican country whose Pacific coast
line the equator cuts across.
