Just before His ascension, Jesus was
with His apostles, atld He told them.
"Ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in
Jerusalem . . . and unto the uttermost
parts of the earth." .
On the day of Pentecost, the apostles
being together, suddenly from heaven
came a rushing, mighty wind, and there
appeared unto them cloven tongues like
tire that tat upon each one.
Peter and John preached In the porch of
the temple, and the Sadducees, hearing
them, were grieved because they
preached the resurrection, and they laid
hands on them.

OUR LESSON today tells how
the Christian religion, beginning
as a new way of life among a
small group of humble, unlettered
men, under the leadership of
Jesus of Nazareth, grew until it
had spread over the whole of the
then known world, Palestine, then
Asia and Europe
The New Testament stories
give us the entire story the be
ginning, growth, and spread of
tins religion under the leadership
of the Master while He was on
earth, and after His death and
ascension. Its continued expansion
under His disciples
Nothing could stop It Persecu
tion, torture death Its disciples
could not be silenced Obeying the
Injunction of Jesus to spread the
message "in Jerusalem, and In
Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto
the uttermost part of the earth,"
In the nearly 2.000 years since the
tune the apostles started their
missionary work, there are no
civilized nations on the face of
the globe that have not heard, in
part, at least, of the Gospel of
Jesus Christ
it was Just before Jesus' as
cension that, being svith His

and the disciples were scattered.
Philip went to Samaria and
preached Christ to the people
there. They listened and believed.
Among these people was one
Simon who was a charlatan one
who pretended to perform mir
acles, fooling the people. After
listening to Philip, Simon too was
converted and continued with
Philip.
Now there arose dissension In
the church because certain of the
Jews felt that if a Gentile re
ceived the message, he should be
come a Jew be circumsired.
Peter, however, had a vision and
told it to these doubters.
He saw a sheet let down from
heaven with all manner of living
things in it. A voice said to him,
"Rise, Peter, kill and eat." Peter
was horrified and said he had
never eaten anything unclean
meaning the meats the Jews con
sidered unclean. However, the
voice answered "What God hath
cleansed, that call not thou un
clean " The argument eventually
died out, and Gentiles were re
ceived the same as Jews

Jesus had told them that they

after performing a miracle,

Paul and Timothy, the son of a
Jewess and a Greek And how
while they were at Troas a vision
appeared to Paul of a man of
Macedonia, who prayed to him to
"come over into Macedonia to
help us" So to Macedonia in
northern Greece they went.
For nearly 20 years Paul trav
eled, spreading the gospel over
the earth, but finally his wander
ings were ended He was taken
prisoner in Rome into "protec

Paul was allowed to live In a
house of his own, but with a sol
dier to guard him Nero was then
on the, Roman throne Nero, the
arch persecutor of Christians who
martyred thousands of believers,
including Paul.
Yet here, guarded as he was,
Paul at this time was allowed to
"receive all that came to him.
Preaching the kingdom of God,
and teaching those things which
concern the Lord Jesus Christ,
with all confidence, no man for

A map showing the missionary
journeys of Paul and his com
panions would be most helpful in
teaching this lesson.
