Ilamu Kendall of Ltnoir, served nine years in prison at the
turn of the century for a murder lie did not commit. And now he
wants the inscription changed on the tombstone of the slain man.
Lawrence Nelson It reads: "Murdered and robbed hy Damp Ken
dall and John Vickers. Sept. 25, 1906." Kendall, standing beside
the tombstone, was cleared of any connection with the case after
serving nearly a decade of his 30-year sentence. He was given a
full pardon. Recently he requested Gov. Gregg Cherry to have
the "slanderous" inscription removed. Cherry referred him to lo

Final Rites For
L. B. Compton
Are Conducted
Funeral services for the Rev
Lucius B Compton, 73, a native
of Haywood county who died Mon
day afternoon in Asheville, were
conducted Wednesday afternoon
at Haywood Street Methodist
Church near the spot where he
began his work 43 years ago.
Rev. Mr. Compton was president
and founder of Kliada Orphanage,
Inc. .and founder of Faith Cottage.
Officiating were the Rev. W. K.
Paul of Minneapolis. Minn., past
president of the International
Union of Gospel Missions, and I he
Rev. Peter MacFarlane of St.
Paul, Minn.
He had been in declining health
for several months ;nri failed
rapidly followinu a major operation
performed last Tuesday
Mr Compton was born in Hay
wood county and resided here until
he was 15 years "hi As a young
man, he suffered from two infirmi
ties, a crippled knee and stutter
ing speech When he was about
20 years old. he was converted in a
Cincinnati rescue mission and the
speech impediment disappeared. In
later vcirs. he became widely
sought after as a speaker.
A widely-known minister, Mr.
Compton was president of the In
ternal ional Union of Gosprl Mis
sions at the time of his death. The
organization was srheduled to hold
a meeting in Asheville this spring.
Survivors include the widow,
I he former Miss Edith Van Dusen
of Painted Post, N. Y ; a daughter.
Miss Klizaheth Compton; and two
brothers, James Compton of Green
ville. S C. and Tom Compton of
Hazelwood.

The one millionth rural telephone to be added by the Bell
System since World War II was placed in service Thursday on the
farm of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Pace in Alamance County. Mr.
Pace is shown at center receiving the instrument from Ray F.
Hewitt. Southern Hell installer, as Mrs. Pace smiles approval. The
first call was made to President Truman by Senator-Elect J. M.
Broughkui.
