Beta Sigma Phi
Plans To Help
Needy Family
The December meeting of the
Alpha Theta Chapter of the Beta
Sigma Phi was held Thursday eve
ning, December 9, at the Court
House,
Miss Edith Summerrow, presi
dent,, presided during the business
session and at this time plans were
made to help a needy family this
Christmas. The family to be help
ed by the sorority this year is a re
fuge family from Ukraine, who
live here in Waynesville.
Miss Summerrow was in charge
of the program, and' presented Mrs.
Joe Liner who gave a delightful
lecture on the art of dressing. The
next meeting will be December
24th at the home of Miss Dorothy
Rieheson and following the busi
ness session Christmas gifts will be
exchanged.
Mrs. J. T. Bailey of Canton will
arrive this week to spend the holi
days, with her brother-in-law and
stster, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. El wood.
Miss Amelia MacFayden left
Sunday for Charlotte, where she
will spend Christmas as me guesi
of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Clark.
Miss Johnston
Has Program At
Music Club
Miss Margaret Johnston was in
charge of the program at the De
cember meeting of the Waynesville
Music Club, which was held at The
Lodge Friday evening.
Miss Johnston's subjeft was
American Christmas Carols and she
discussed the old mountain carols
as well as the more familiar ones.
Miss Ida Jean Broun sang two
of the old carols, "Babe Of Bethle
hem" and "Cherry Tree Carol",
and 'he groun sang a number of
carols including "Twelve Days Of
Christmas", O. Little Town Of
Bethlehem", and "We Three
Kings".
Special guests for the meeting
included Dr. Benjamin Swalin, di
rector of the North Carolina Sym
phony Orchestra, and Mrs. Swalin
Dr. Swalin talked informally on
his work with the orchestra.
Dr. Mary Michal, president of
the club, presided and hostesses
for the meet ins were Mrs. Robert
Turner and Mrs. L K. Green.
Guests in addition to Dr. and
Mrs. Swalin were Mrs. Henry
Davis, Miss Evelyn Reed, Mrs. Ed
gar Goold. and Mrs. Lulu Uzzell.

Has Christmas
Program
A candlelight carol service was
presented by the sixth grade pupils
of the Hazelwood Elementary
School as the main feature of the
December meeting of the Parent
Teacher Association on last Tues
day night. The service was direct
ed by Mrs. Curat Stanley and Mrs.
Robert Palmer with Mrs. Elina
Prescott as accompanist.
The program included songs by
the entire grade and a Christmas
pageant with Bobby Thrower aa
Joseph, Winnie Farmer as Mary,
and Pauline Inman as an Angel.
Wise men were Bobby Hooper,
Stuart Roberson, and Richard
Trout man.
Preceding the program a brief
business session vas held and Dr.
R. Stuart Robersorj reported that
the project committee had purchas
ed a piano for the school.
A social hour was held in con
elusion and refreshments were
served by Mrs. Paul Davis, Mrs.
Blanche Jervis, and Mrs. Connie
Muse.
Miss Rosemary Herman, who is
doing post-graduate work in the
Spanish Department at the Univer
sity of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill, arrived on Sunday to spend
the Christmas vacation with her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. K. Herman.

Christmas Party
The Veterans of Foreign Wars
Auxiliary had their annual Christ
mas party last Friday night, De
cember 17, in the new club room
on Miller Street.
For the occasion the club room
was decorated with Christmas dec
orations which included a large
decorated tree.
During the evening several
games were played.

Mrs. Ralph Prevost was hostess
of a luncheon on Saturday In honor
of her son, Ralph Prevost, Jr., on
the occasion of his tenth birthday
anniversary.
Christmas decorations were used
and the dining table was centered
with an arrangement of holly and
red candles. Placet were marked

The guests were entertained at a
movie during tha afternoon.

Takes Christmas Gifts
To Oteen Hospital
Several members of the Veter
ans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary vis
ited Oteen Hospital last Thursday
night and presented Christmas
gifts to the patients, including, ash
trays and books.
Those representing the local
auxiliary included: Mrs. Hub Tate;
Mrs. Ethel Fisher, Miss Dixie
Campbell, Mrs. Roy Campbell and
Mrs. Charles McDaris.
