Drinks, Mrs. Fred Campbell. Miss Edith Summerrow is presi dent of the sorority. Tommy Allen Has Fourth Birthday Party Mrs. John C. Allen entertained her son, Tommy Stringfield Allen, at a party given on Tuesday morn ing at the Waynesville Kindergar ten. The occasion marked the fourth birthday anniversary of the young honor guest. Mrs. Allen was assisted by Miss Sue Willard Lindsley, teacher of the kindergarten, Mrs. Hugh Sloan, Jr., and Mrs. Roger Walker. Refreshments were served fol lowing various games and a color scheme of blue and yellow was noted. Favors were party hats and balloons. The guest list inluded Margaret Woolsey Reed, Charlotte Watkins Trudie Massie, Mary Barber, Mary Linda Sloan, Jimmy Jennings, Jack Prevost, Danny and Freddie WhiS' enhunt, Harris Prevost, Jimmy Medford, Edwin Davis, Bobby Walker, and Johnny Allen. Mrs. Frieda Knopf and Mrs, Ernest Withers are spending this week in Atlanta. Mrs. Withers went down to attend the 91st birth i day celebration ot her mother, Mrs, S. C. Satterthwaite. Engagement Of Miss McCracken Is Announced Mr. and Mrs. Carey McCracken of Lake Junaluska have announced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Betty June McCracken, to Thomas M. Ray, son of Mrs. Bon ner Ray and the late Mr. Ray of Waynesville. The wedding will take place in the spring. The bride-elect is a graduate of the Waynesville High School and, n her senior year, was chosen by her class mates as May Queen to reign over the first annual May Day Ball. She was also a member of the High School Chorus and Band. She entered Mars Hill College last fall and was recently selected as a member of the college glee club. Mr. Ray is also a graduate of the Waynesville High School and at tended the University of North Carolina. He was a member of the high school organization, the Gam ma Club and is a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Homemakers Club Meets Tuesday With Mrs. Bryson The Waynesville Homemakers Club met on Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. Howard Bryson with Mrs. Ben Phillips, new presi dent, presiding. Other new officers, who assum ed their duties at this time, are Mrs. Jack Rogers, vice president, and Mrs. Jimmy Williams, secre tary. Miss Mary Margaret Smith, home demonstration agent, gave a dem onstration on Broiling Meats. Miss Smith broiled steaks which were later served to the members. Those present in addition to the officers were Mrs. Marion Bridges, Mrs. Howell Bryson, Mrs. Charles Isley, Mrs. Frank Kirkpatrick, Mrs. J. Lloyd Kirkpatrick, Mrs. Law rence Leatherwood, Mrs. Earl Mes ser, and Mrs. Carl Ratcliffe. D.A.R. Chapter Holds January Meeting Mr. and Mrs. Carey McCracken of Lake Junaluska have announced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Betty June McCracken, to Thomas M. Ray, son of Mrs. Bonner Hay and the late Mr. Ray of Waynesville. The wedding will take place in the spring. Mrs. Dewey Hyatt and son Aaron Hyatt, spent several days this week in Charlotte on business. Hazelwood P.-T.A. Holds Meeting The Hazelwood Elementary school Parent Teachers Association gathered at the school Monday night and heard an address by Lawrence Leatherwood, principal. Mr. Leatherwood cited the school needs of North Carolina tp the group and a film was shown as part of the program. Mrs. Richard Barber, Jr., and Mrs. Jonathan Woody left yester day for Atlanta where they will visit relatives for a few days. Bryan Medford and Bill Plott left Wednesday for Washington to attend the inauguration of Presi dent Truman. MRS. GREEN IMPROVING Mrs. Waldo E. Green of Route 1, Clyde, who recently underwent an operation at St. Joseph's Hospital in Asheville, is recoverng and ex pects to return to her home this week. MARRIAGE LICENSES Morris L. Kelly and Edna Davis, both of Canton. The January meeting of the Dorcas Bell Love Chapter, Daugh ters of the American Revolution, was held Tuesday afternoon in the Assembly Room of the Presby terian Church, with Mrs. J. W. Kil lian, regent, presiding. Hostesses were Mrs. Killian and Mrs. J, R. Boyd Mrs. James M. Long was in charge of the program and had as her subject, "The Preservation of Antiquities in North Carolina". She read an article on this work by Miss Gertrure Carraway, state regent of the D.A.R. Mrs. Ifng also called attention to (he article in the January 8 issue of Slate Magazine, which included the words and nuisi cof the song, "Old Hay wood, I Love Thee". Music for the song was composed by Miss Margaret Stringfield and the words were written by the late Mrs. M J. Bra nner. Mrs. Charles Quinlan reviewed the national magazine and spoke of the trip through the state made by the national officers last fall and of their visit to D.A.R. approved schools. Mrs. T. Lenoir Gwyn, general chairman for the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the organiza tion of the chapter, reported that plans for the event were complete. She stated that a luncheon would be held at the Towne House- on Thursday, January 27, and that special guests would include Miss Gertrude Carraway, of New Bern, state regent; Miss Elizabeth Home of Wadesboro, state vice-regent; Mrs. J. F. Jonas of Marion, district director; and regents of all the chapters in this district. Mrs. Samuel H. Bushnell and Mrs. James R. Boyd were elected delegates to the State Conference of the D.A.R., which will be held in Asheville March 1-3. Mrs. Ben Colkitt and Mrs. J. F. Abel were elected alternates. Delegates elected to the National Continental Congress to be held in April were Mrs. R. N. Barber and Mrs. Hugh Jolly. Mrs. R. L. Prevost, chairman of Ellis Island, reported a box of yarn had been sent to the Island, and MAKES DEAN'S LIS! Claude B. Sr.. reported that she had received magazines for the Cherokee Indian School. A committee was appointed to nominate officers for the coming year and included Mrs. S. H. Bush nell, Mrs. J. L. Elwood, and Mrs. Robert Osborne. A social hour followed adjourn ment of the meeting.
