Since the Park was created lor the permanent enjoyment of all the people, it is my nrm con viction that we in Western Norm Carolina should in some appro priate way show our appreciation to Charles for his unselfish efforts and devotion to the cause of the Great Smokv Mountains National Park and Parkway. It is thought ihat it ic more fitting to honor our fellow men during their active days than after their barges nave sailed beyond seas. It has been said thousands and thousands of times that honor means more to a man when he is alive than when he is dead. But how often do we overlook in these busy and hectic days the single truth of this state ment? How often has tne woria eulogized in death the, man it knew slightly and valued less dur ing his lifetime? There is a good moral in our thoughts at this point that we should all take to heart. In all of our relationships and ac tivities with mankind, let s strive in hoenme better acquainted one with another, and when one among us demonstrates qualities of lead ership and renders service that is outstanding, let us not permit tnese virtues to he hidden under a bush el as it were, but render our ac claim and honor forthwith. Criticism, to which all men are targets, would be easier to with stand if along the highway of life we were more alert and generous to give credit where credit is due.
