" Shorty" Ketner, Owner Hume 130-M Waynesville of the Oteen Baptist Church, told the history of the Cherokee In dians, which he referred to as the "Trail of Tears". He recounted how the Cherokee tribe, once a mighty empire cov ering 40,000 squaiv miles, was nearly wiped out at the hand of the white man. Rev. Mr. Williams told how the Cherokees were rounded up in stockades and forced to start the long march across to the Mississip pi River and to the Indian terri tory in Oklahoma. About 1,000 of the natives es caped from the federal officers and hid in the Smoky Mountains, the speaker said. From this few, came the present generation of Cherokees, he added. At the afternoon business ses sion, W. L. Rikard of Canton was elected district lay leader for the next six months. Assistants named were Frank Davis of Lake Juna luska, Lee Penland of Hayesvllle, J. C. Sorrells of Franklin, and Le Roy Sossamon of Bryson City. Harley Wright of Canton gave the district treasurer's report and Norman Freel of Canton, report of the district board of trustees. The trustees were authorized to make repairs on the district parsonage in Waynesville. J. P. Kirk of Sylva was named a member of the district trustees, succeeding Mrs. E. L. McKee of Sylva, deceased. Report of the resolutions com mittee was given by Mrs. C. O. Newell of Crabtree and other con ference committees were heard.
