Meet Hazelwood
Here May 18
Manager Elmer Dudley, of the
Hazelwood nine, announced that a
game with the Asheville-Biltmore
Junior College Bulldogs has been
scheduled for Wednesday after
noon, May 18, on the Waynesville
High diamond. The game will get
underway at four o'clock.
Local fans will have a chance
lo see two former members of the
Hazelwood team in action against
the locals. Lanky Dick Povyers and
Lawrence Robinson are holding
down the first base and shortstop
positions respectively, for the Bull
dogs this season and both have
been playing good ball for Coach
Herb Coman.
The Bulldogs have been playing
the teams in the Western North
Carolina Industrial League this
year and have been making excel
lent showings and should provide
plenty of opposition for the locals.
Barney McCosky batted .326 for
the Philadelphia A's in 1948 but
he failed to hit a single home run
for the first season since he enter
ed the majors in 1939.

Sain Says: 'Arm Neuhouser: 'tags
By JOE RE1CHLER
lAP Newsfealuresl
NEW YORK Johnny Sain,
curve ball artist of the Boston
Braves, and Hal Newhouser, south
paw ace of the Detroit Tigers, have
completely different ideas on how
to prepare themselves for the open
ing day of the season.
Sain believes that a pitcher
should concentrate on getting his
Win in scv.pe, and not worry too
much about his legs. Consequent
ly he is not a firm believer in run
ning as a form of exercise.
"The arm is the most import
ant part of the body to a pitch
er," he says. "The main thing is
to get that in shape. The best
way to get the arm in shape is
to pitch. If you do enough of
that, the les will take care of
themselves."
Newhouser, a student of the art
of conditioning, scoffs at Sain's
theory. He goes along with most
hurlers u 10 believe that the first
duty of a pitcher is get the legs
in shape.
"You must get yourself in con
dition from the ground up." he
says. "By that I mean, first get
the legs in shape, then the
stomach, wind and finally the
arm, 1 don't care how strong your
arm is, try and pitch a full nine
inning game and see how rubbery
your legs get if they're not in
perfect condition.
"Your legs must be strong in
any sport. A slight twist or wrench
of the leg can cause a sprain in
the back or arm. I golf for almost
a month just to get my legs in
shape. I believe in lots of run
ning. Get your legs in shape and
the arm will take care of itself."
So here are two contrasting
ideas on how to ffct in condition
and who is there to say which
is more correct? Sain won 24
games last year, pitching 28 com
plete games. It marked the third
straight year hp gained 20 or
more triumphs.
Newhouser was no slouch either.
He captured 21 games, the fourth :
time in the last five years that lie
has topped 20.
Newhouser is 27, Sain 30. Sain
broke into organized baseball in
1937, two years before Hal took
up the game as a career. New
houser, however, reached the big
leagues after one season in the
minors, while Sain knocked around
five years before he got his chance
with the Braves.
Three years iu the service have
kept Sain's victory total down
to 69 as compared to 151! for
Newhouser in nine years of pitch
ing. Sell By Using The Want Ads

Coach Carleton Weatherby and

Just what kind-of a bid Waynes

by the host Asheville team is un
known right now, Mr. Rateliffe
said.
"We haven't been timing the boys
so far," he explained.
But indications are that Way

than it had in last year's.
"We're planning to have entries
in every event except the discus,
