By NEWMAN CAMPBELL THROUGHOUT the ages peo ple have celebrated Important dates with feasts with their fam ilies, with neighbors and friends. Our Bible records many such feasts. In troublous times, such as these, meetings of congenial peo ple either in private homes or in public eating places, helps to cheer us and keep our minds from dwelling too much on dis agreeable future possibilities. The Passover the time when, before the exodus from Egypt, the angel of death passed over the homes of Israel's people to slay the Egyptian firstborn and so persuade Pharaoh to let the Israelites go had been celebrat ed with dear ones for centuries. It was natural, then, that Jesus, who knew His death was near, should desire to observe it with those nearest and dearest to Him His disciples. His disciples asked Jesus where he wanted to eat the passover, and He answered that two of them should go into the city Jerusalem and there they would see a man bearing a water pitch er on his head. They were to follow him, and- where he entered they should tell the master of the "One of you that eateth with M -shall betray Me." whu h moie them all sorrowful, and ca'ise-l them to ask Him one by one. is it I?" The evening services will not be held this Sunday because of ser vices at the High School house to prepare his upper room for them. There they would eat their passover feast. The two disciples did as the Master had told them and in this "large upper room, furnished and ready," the passover was pre pared. This. was on .Thursday evening. "And as they were eating, He took bread, and when He had blessed, He brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take ye: this Is My body. . . . And He took a cup, and when He had given thanks. He gave to them: and they all drank of it. And He said unt them. This is My blood of the covenant, which i poured out for many. . . . Verily I say unto you, I shall no more drink of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I'drink,lt new in the kingdom of God." An account of the regular pro gram of observance of the pass over would be interesting to the children, but there is not room for it in this brief summary of the event. Jesus said to then then, that ter than they knew themselves. Peter was doubtless sincere when he swore to Jesus that he would go with Him into a prison, or even suffer death with Him. but he did not know his own weak ness. He did not know the panic of fear that would overwhelm him when he was in danger and w ould cause him to deny that he knew His Master in the hour of peril. He probably could not know -as Jesus did how near the tragic moment was when he would see his friend tried before prejudiced churchmen who were determined this menace to their religious views and their positions of au thority in the temple was to be removed from the world. Jesus knew full well what was in store for Him. Hknew His enemies well enough to realize that they would leave no stone unturned to do Him to death. He knew too, that the crowds that had gathered around Him when He taught them, or healed their sick, were fickle, and 'would turn on Him' if swayed by the influen tial men of the community. The nation's Sunday Schools, says joard Chairman .lames L. Krafl of Kraft Foods Company, vital tor transforming the energies of youth into the power ot spiritual adulthood. In advising regular attendance at Sunday School, Mr. Kraft makes , this statement: Almost everyone v ho has occa sion to meet and wrr. with young people- -as 1 hav e had the privilege of doing for a good many decades is struck by one eternal quaii'iy re curring in the youlh of every gen eration. That quality is eagerness: eagerness to do. eagerness to achieve; eagerness to learn. 11 is a v tillable .Niagara Falls of energy and potential power. The boys and girls ot today have I his w onderful quality, this new hope tor the wo. Id. Within them selves, they havi the potential power to 'ebiiild the world nearer to heart's desire. If they will it so, thtv can make 'his a productive and peaceful world. But young people can utilie their tremendous energies to produce good in the world only it they are able to har ness them and put them to work ""Viently and intelligently. Help ing to turn these mighty energies into the true power of spiritual adulthood is the work the sole work oi the Sunday schools of our churches. Nowhere else are the training and spiritual education and lessons in self-discipline and self-realization available to oui young people. The work of out Sunday schools therefore becomes a primary consideration of every responsible adult in this nation. Our public schools do an import ant job of helping lo train young minds. There are countless civic programs which help to train young bodies and coordinale young muscles and leach some of I he les sons of good sportsmanship. These have the deserved support of most of our citizenry, yet without spiritual education, a sound back ground Vf moral and religious train ing, all other courses of Irainin" fail. in tins most important of all the responsibilities of education-lhat of training the mind and spirit -; countless millions of adults are woefully neglectful or indifferent or both. To provide for the school ing of a child's mind to provide lor his physical health, yet to ne glect the health and growth of the soul within him is to rob him of his birthright and cripple his spirit. L'ntil every hoy and girl ;lnd very man and woman in this iUi has become an active parlicip ant in a Sunday school and church Program, we are neglecting our most important national resource ho spiritual power of our people 'I is not enough merely to send ' 'hildn-n lo Sunday schoo.
