They persisted through all history, until very recently, and now there seems to be a resurgence of them, although they are covered up through ac cusations of "political activities against the state." Jesus, weeping over the Holy City of Jerusalem, lamented: "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee." So we come to the story of how the greatest prophet of all times was tried and condemned to death, although the Roman ruler, Pilate, "could find no fault with Him." Even today, those who propose, to upset the regular order, no matter how beneficial their Ideas; may be, and how high their ideals, arc subject at least to bit ter criticism and hatred. Jesus was first led to the high priest Annas, who really was not the high priest, as he had been deposed, but he insisted on the title. He asked Jesus some ques tionsnot related in the Scrip turesas they were meant only to gather material for the trial following. Annas hated this Car penter and wanted to get rid of Him. Caiaphas. the real high priest and the officers, chief priests and scribes, were gathered together. MEMORY VERSE "A Iricni loveth at all times." Proverb J7.J7. They sought witnesses, but none were forthcoming except those hired to testify falsely. Caiaphas asked Jesus who was silent until then "Art Thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?" "And Jesus said, "I am: ye shall see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven." The high priest rent his clothes, saying, "Ye have heard the blas phemy: what think ye?" And they all condemned Him to death." And they-Aegan to strike and spit upon Him. Now Peter had followed his Master even to the court, and as Teter was beneath the palace warming himself over a fire, a maid saw him and asked him If he wasn't with Jesus of Nazareth. Panic-stricken, Peter denied it, and went out into the court, and the cock crowed once. Again a maid said to him, "Surely thou ... r thenr rnr tnou an M I 1 Mile Ul -' '- . Mark 14:53-15:15; Luke 23:4-12; Gallaean, and thy speech agreeth thereto." Peter began to curse and swear that he knew nothing about the matter, and again he heard the ijcock crow. Peter recalled then how Jesus had said mai oeiore the cock should crow twice, "thou shall deny Me thrice," and he wept bitterly. The next trial was before the Roman, Pilate, fOr the Jews could not condemn a man to death. The first thing Pilate asked was, "What accusation bring ye against this Man?" The answer they gave was, "We found this fellow perverting the nation, saying He himself is Christ a king." Pilate turned to, Jesus, asking. "Art Thou . the king of the Jews?" and Jsus answered, "Thou sayest it." ; Pilate said to the people, "I find no fault in this man." Pilate had had a message from his wife when he sat down on the judgment seat, telling him, "Have thou nothing to do with that just Man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream be cause of Him." At the feast of the Passover the governor was in the habit of releasing a prisoner to the people, and he had such a one in jail, who had been guilty of insurrec tion and murder. His name was Barabbas. The chief priests and elders had swayed the mob to ask that Barabbas be loosed and Jesus be crucified, so when Pilate asked them "What shall I do then with Jesua which i called Christ?" they shouted, "Let Him b crucified-" John tells us that when Pilate heard Jesus was a Galilean, he sent him to Herod. Herod questioned the Lord in many ways, but the chief priests and scribes vehemently accused Him, so Herod mocked Jesus, arrayed Him in & gorgeous robe and sent Him again to Pilate. Seeing the spirit of the people, Pilate released Barabbas and had Jesus scourged and sent Him away to be crucified. The soldiers platted a crown of thorns and put it on hLs head and a purple robe was put on Him, and they cried, "Hail. King of the Jewa," and struck Him. Pilate seeing Him thus arrayed, said: "Behold me sun: by TM Uterattiooal CeuntU at BUIglMS Pilate would have released Jesus, t the populace cried, "Cruciy H , crucify Him."
