SABLE ISLAND (UP This
shrinking 20-mile lump of dirty
gray sand called the "graveyard of
the Atlantic," where more than 200
ships are known to have been
wrecked, soon may disappear be
neath the turbulent North Allan-
tic.
Geologists believe Sable Island
wi'l be almost completely under
water within the next century. The
gale-blasted seas surroundinK Sable
are among the worst in the At
lantic, and that, accompanied by
the unbelievably thick ton. bus
caused many a ship to be blown
onto the grasping fingers of Sable's
lengthy sandbars.
The island Is said to have been
more than 100 miles long a century
or two ago. but decades of pound
ing by the hungry waves has eaten
away most of the land, ll is now
but 20 miles in length, one mile
wide, and In the middle there is a
ten-mile long salt water lake.
16 Live There
Although more than 200 vessels
are known to have sunk there, the
number of unrecorded shipwrecks
is believed to reach at least an
olhei 100.
The island's residents are three
melerorological men, three marine
radio officers. 1(1 transport depart
ment workers and three wives.
Middle-aged Capt. Patrick Solo
wau is in charge.
Crescent -shaped Sable is 100
miles o(T the Nova Scotia coast, a
few miles north of the Gulf Stream.
Pug of the pea-soup variety clings
to Die island almost all tile year.
The warm air over the Gulf Stream
constantly clashes with the frigid
air over the polar current which
passes north of Sable.
Kvery fall, the 22 men and three
women tie down everything mov
able in preparation for the annual
hurricanes. Violent wind storms
whip up the United States east
coast a few miles offshore, curving
out to sea as they move further
into the North Atlantic and hit the
island.
