A farmer and native of Haywood County, lie had resided in Hie Maggie section mosl of his life. Surviving are the widow, Mrs Annie Caldwell Davis; three son?. Hugh L. Davis of Richmond, Kv . William G. Davis of Bryson City, and Ed Davis of Maggie; four daughters, Mrs Crawford League and Mrs. Norville Rogers of Vaynes ille. Mrs Frank R Roberts of Portsmouth. Ya . and Mrs Har rison Balentine of Magele; and 12 grandchildren. Funeral arrangements under the direction of Garrett Funeral Hume were incomplete this morning. Among the star performers will be Smiling Ked Raper, the singing school teacher, accompanied by Joe Pre: .'.ley and his Carolina Moun tain Boys. On the program with him will be George Pegram, the Randleman artist who won the Carolina Folk Ftstival at the University of North Carolina; the Blalock sisters, James Haynte. Wiley Morris, Joe Preley, the veteran fiddler; V. R. Sturgill, Taft Crawford. Cecil Riddle. Rusty Waldroup. and Johnny Rhymer, among others. Judging the square danpe and string band contests will be J. J Bailey of Ashevllle, a chief of rail road detectives; Roger Ferguson. Maeeie School principal; and Can ton Postmaster Wade Hill. Some of the top entrants who will be competing for the string band honors are the Haywood Ramblers, Carpenter Family, Soco Gap band. Uncle Walter Davis and his Mt. Mitchell Ramblers, the Blue Ridge Partners, Gus Johnson's band, the Carolina Mountain Boys, and Farmers Ball band, and the Vernon Rogers band. The beauty contest for the crown of 1949 Festival Queen will be another bright feature of the Sat urday night program. Reigning over Hie contest will be last year's queen, Mary Osborne. So far, 15 of Haywood's loveliest girls have become candidates for the honor: Margaret Robinson, Judy Patton, Martha Raye Smathers, Patsy Sue Hemphill. Dorothy Norris, Mary Ann Dudley, Barbara McKinney, Frances Howell, Nancy Meatora, Ruby Smathers, Judy Davis, Betty Pardue, Betty Poe, Selda Mae Rhinehart, and Anita Brooks.
