Kaleigh. N. Speaking Sunday iiioiiiin;; en the topic, "The Sons of Cain." Or. l'o , teat said, "the dilemma that faced ' Cain, in the famous story of Hum world's first pair of brothers was what to do with one who while; very like oneself was al:o vci different from him'.' This is the paradox of fraternity: everybody is like everybody else; i everybody is different from every- ' body else. "Cain solved his problem by j killitig his biother because he re garded him as a rival and therefore an enemy. ; "As a result, he heard the world of nature he had outraged cut -c ; him from the ground, the socicly he had outraged ostracize him; his ' own inner self doom him to per- petual fear, and God, whom he had affronted, banish him to vaga- I bondage. "Today we are plagued with the unresolved paradox of our sense of kinship and our sense of alienation from our human brothers. "We can either regard our broth ers as rivals, competitors, enemies in economies, social practices and political systems, and destroy them, or we can see in the differences that separate us the variety that can enrich us and. finding kinship in a higher ,ynthe.-is, unmake the .mistake of Cain. There was no real reason for Cain's angry ai t. Those who build , ghettos, segregate races, destroy j competitors are the modern sons of 1 Cain. j Those who find in ('lirUl the new ! principle of integral 'on have learn- j ed that in Him there can be no Jew nor Greek, no slave nor free, no barbarian nor Scythian, no com munist nor capitalist. "They are the grandsons of Adam; not the sons of Cain." Harold Mohn, of Chicago, executive secretary of the Methodist-wide Advance for Christ and His Church movement, declared Thursday night that "Methodism stands at the Crossroads of the world." Dr. Mohn spoke at a south-wide l.av men's Conference at Luke Jun- luska Methodist Assembly, lie continued. "In this hour of the world's greatest m.rferial pro gress, mankind is dangerously near to its greatest moral failure. "I'or the first time in human his tory man has become frightened at the products of his own inventions and at the prospects of his intelll genre. "What makes Hiis crossroads of our human history so perilous are two factors In modern life, namely, that the prevailing mood is fatalism and the dominant philosophy of life is secularism." l acing the question as to what Methodism is doing about the Ad vance, nr. Mohn reported that at I he end of the first year, with only seven months intensive effort, the I lu ce linancial phases had out stripped all the guessers. In World Service, he said, there was an increase of nearly 30 per cent, reaching the figure of $7, (i72.:iW). Alongside of this, the Woman's Society of Christian Service re ceived $5,580,373. During the Week of Dedication, he reported that nearly sixty per cent of the Metho dist Churclips in America expert- need a renewed spiritual dedica tion and made a freewill 'offering of more than $900,0(10. not count-. Ing $100,000 ratbed by the Woman's Society of Christian Service in their Week of Prayer -offering. Added to all of this, he said, Ad vance Specials have reached more than $t.r()0,00() in hew'mdney.- In total figures, as reported by Dr. Mohn, the Methodist Church in its missionary offering for the Advance lor Christ movement, still in the first year of its 1048-52 pro j ram of Advance has given more than $1(1,500.000. He urged the more than 500 lay- "icn from southern states to keep s'ep with the movement now sweep ing Methodism in a four-year, four goal program. Comments From Some Of Our Visitors Andrew 1'.
