This is what Jeff B Wilson, di
rector of the Division of Highwa
Safety of the North Carolina De
partment of Motor Vehicles, which
is sponsoring the Departments
.li.iy drive against speed. today
called the mental attitude of many
d rivers
"This attitude." Wilson said. is
what makes so many motorists who
would never risk money gambling
go out on the highway and stake
their lives, and other persons',
against five or ten minutes of saved
time "

Stolen reported lo police here that
a rear view mirror had been stolen
' from his car.
According to the Department, it
the speeding motorist has an ac
cident at 60 miles an hour while
gambling in this way. the odds that
he will kill or seriously injure him
self, his passengers, someone in an
other car. or perhaps an innocent
pedestrian, are so staggering that
few professional gamblers would
touch them with a ten-foot pole
"Willi the slogan "Speeders
Lose." Wilson said, "the Depart
ment hopes to impress upon motor
ists I he importance of the drivers
responsibility toward himself and
his passengers. Since one out of
every I hive fatal accidents involves
a motorist driving too fast for con
ditions as a contributing factor. I he
Department feels that excessive
speed, although recognized by the
public as a dangerous practice, has
become obscured by other, more
dramatic, accident causes "
Speed is one of those tilings that
a motorist can get away with for a
long time . . . almost until he has
convinced himself that lies built
up an immunity to death. Wilson
said. "Hut even if he gels away
with speeding," Wilson stated,
"aside Iron, the risk it costs him
more in money.
"In comparison ot top cruising
speeds of (in miles an hour and 411
miles per hour." Wilson continued,
"studies show that at the greater
speed gasoline consumption was
more than 30 per cent higher than
at the lower speed, oil consump
tion was almost lour limes a great,
wear on tires was approximately
two and one-half times as fast, and
the gain in the average speed was
only IS miles an hour"
In Ihi' lace of the evidence, Wil
son again reminded motorists that
excessive speed is a sucker's gain
hit his life versus nothing, actu
ally hut further loss.
