Upper Crabtree Residents Entertain Fines Creek People In Field Day By MRS. FURMAN NOLAND Mountaineer Correspondent Approximately 250 people at tended the Field Day and farm and home tour in Upper Crabtree Com munity last Thursday as the Upper Crabtree people entertained their neighbors from Fines Creek. After showing their guests the improvements made in the Com munity Development Program, the Upper Crabtree residents enter tained them with a picnic dinner on the grounds of the Crabtree lron Duff School. John Rogei. t p per Crabtree chairman, welcomed the visitors, headed by Charles Duekelt, their chairman. Then hosts and guests competed against each other in games and contests lor the rest of the after noon. The final score was: Upper Crab tree 215, Fines Creek 159. Leaving the school in the morn in the first stop on the farm tour v.as the farm of T. H Ferguson, where the visitors from Fines Creek saw an excellent 4-H baby oeef project. At John Rogers, they examined I .. ik.,. fine beet cattle ana poum. ..... went to the cemetery to see improvements there. a i the home of Max Davis the and Bill Smith was a demonstration of what could be done in the way ot improving a house. They also saw a good tobacco crop and poultry hock. The tour then carried them to rm farm of A. C. Walker, where ined the corn and all- alfa crops, among the finest in ,h.. area At T. T. The plan of the farm and home lav out was the object of deep in terest on the part of the 10 visitors from Fines Creek when they visited the farm of Ii F. Kogers. After the tour here, they were served ice cold lemonade. At Boone Rogers , they saw line examples of sheep and cattle pas ture and home improvement. Con tinuing on to Ray Best's, they saw a fine herd of swine, and excellent examples of home improvement and ladino clover. Then they examined the beef cattle, silo, and the home improve ment at the farm nf Frank Modfoid After visiting C. I.. Hill's : see the beef cattle, alfalfa, and corn there, hosts and guests went to the school for dinner. Among those who assisted in making the Field Day a success were County Agent Wayne Cor pening. Assistant County Agents Herb Singletary and Turner Cath ey, Dave Underwood, who umpired the softball games, and Frank Da vis, one of Iron Dull s community leaders. S MATHERS Mrs. Laura Howell Smathers. one of Waynesville's oldest and most beloved residents, died at her home Thursday night after a short illness. Funeral services were conducted at the First Methodist Church Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Russell L. Voting, pastor, and the Rev Paul Hardin, a former pastor, officiating. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Collins Howell, pioneer Metho dist minister, and Mrs. Morning Garrett Howell cif Jonathan Creek, and a granddaughter of Henry Howell, one of the early settlers of Haywood County Her brother, the late Capl. Alden Howell, who reached the age of 10(i. established lite first hank in Waynesville Following her marriage to Dr. Smathers on August 1 11175. Mrs. Smathers devoted her life to her family and home She was still alert in both mind and body at the lime of her death and was one ol Waynesville's most interesting personalities.
