Max Gardner who became Governor of North Carolina, Undersecretary of the Treasury and ambassa dor to the Court of St. James. Shown at the unveiling are: Hatha way Cross, former North Carolina Paroles Commissioner and long time admirer of Gardner; Ralph W. Gardner, eldest son; Mrs. Gard ner, the widow; and Edwin M. Gill, former Commissioner of Reve nue who served Gardner as private secretary during his governor ship. Gardner's grave is only 300 yards from the marker.
